Pottery 20,000 years old found in a Chinese cave

This undated image made available by Science/AAAS shows one of the pottery fragments recovered from a layer dating approximately 20,000 years old in the Xianrendong cave in south China?s Jiangxi province. The discovery makes them the oldest known pottery in the world, archaeologists say. The findings, which will appear in the journal Science on Friday, June 29, 2012 add to recent efforts that have dated pottery piles in east Asia to more than 15,000 years ago, refuting conventional theories that the invention of pottery correlates to the period about 10,000 years ago when humans moved from being hunter/gathers to farming. BEIJING (AP) ? Pottery fragments found in a south China cave have been confirmed to be 20,000 years old, making them the oldest known pottery in the world, archaeologists say.

The findings, which will appear in the journal Science on Friday, add to recent efforts that have dated pottery piles in east Asia to more than 15,000 years ago, refuting conventional theories that the invention of pottery correlates to the period about 10,000 years ago when humans moved from being hunter-gathers to farmers.

The research by a team of Chinese and American scientists also pushes the emergence of pottery back to the last ice age, which might provide new explanations for the creation of pottery, said Gideon Shelach, chair of the Louis Frieberg Center for East Asian Studies at The Hebrew University in Israel.

"The focus of research has to change," Shelach, who is not involved in the research project in China, said by telephone.

In an accompanying Science article, Shelach wrote that such research efforts "are fundamental for a better understanding of socio-economic change (25,000 to 19,000 years ago) and the development that led to the emergency of sedentary agricultural societies."

He said the disconnection between pottery and agriculture as shown in east Asia might shed light on specifics of human development in the region.

Wu Xiaohong, professor of archaeology and museology at Peking University and the lead author of the Science article that details the radiocarbon dating efforts, told The Associated Press that her team was eager to build on the research.

"We are very excited about the findings. The paper is the result of efforts done by generations of scholars," Wu said. "Now we can explore why there was pottery in that particular time, what were the uses of the vessels, and what role they played in the survival of human beings."

The ancient fragments were discovered in the Xianrendong cave in south China's Jiangxi province, which was excavated in the 1960s and again in the 1990s, according to the journal article.

Wu, a chemist by training, said some researchers had estimated that the pieces could be 20,000 years old, but that there were doubts.

"We thought it would be impossible because the conventional theory was that pottery was invented after the transition to agriculture that allowed for human settlement."

But by 2009, the team ? which includes experts from Harvard and Boston universities ? was able to calculate the age of the pottery fragments with such precision that the scientists were comfortable with their findings, Wu said.

"The key was to ensure the samples we used to date were indeed from the same period of the pottery fragments," she said.

That became possible when the team was able to determine the sediments in the cave were accumulated gradually without disruption that might have altered the time sequence, she said.

Scientists took samples, such as bones and charcoal, from above and below the ancient fragments in the dating process, Wu said.

"This way, we can determine with precision the age of the fragments, and our results can be recognized by peers," Wu said.

Shelach said he found the process done by Wu's team to be meticulous and that the cave had been well protected throughout the research.

The same team in 2009 published an article in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, in which they determined the pottery fragments found in south China's Hunan province to be 18,000 years old, Wu said.

"The difference of 2,000 years might not be significant in itself, but we always like to trace everything to its earliest possible time," Wu said. "The age and location of pottery fragments help us set up a framework to understand the dissemination of the artifacts and the development of human civilization."

Spice Girls power up for stage musical

By Pete Jeary , NBC News

The iconic songs of Girl Power will be back on stage this Christmas, when "Viva Forever!" takes to the stage at London?s Piccadilly Theater.

This new musical features many of the songs made famous by Victoria Beckham, Melanie Brown, Emma Bunton, Melanie Chisholm and Geri Halliwell -- corporately better known as the Spice Girls.

And in a rare show of public unity, the five Spice Girls appeared together, briefly,?on Tuesday to launch the show -- which is produced by Judy Cramer, the lady behind the Abba musical "Mamma Mia!"

Geri Halliwell (the original Ginger Spice) said, ?Years ago we thought -- wouldn?t it be a great idea to turn all this into musical. And all these years later Girl Power is still going strong -- it?s living proof to follow your dreams.?

The musical has been written by British comedian Jennifer Saunders, who has woven Spice Girls songs into a story of talent, fame and the pressures of celebrity on the relationships that really matter.

Emma Bunton (Baby Spice, in her former life) described the transformation from page to stage as an incredible creative process. ?It?s a great story,? Bunton said. ?The words and the music work so well together, it?s very moving.?

"Viva Forever!" profiles the life of Viva, a talented girl and her best friends, who get swept up in today?s obsession with celebrity culture and talent shows.

?It?s a story that clearly refers back to the early days of the Spice Girls,? writer Jennifer Saunders said, ?But it?s as contemporary as the next series of 'The X Factor.'?

As the latest in a series of so-called Jukebox musicals, everyone behind "Viva Forever!" hopes it will introduce a new generation of audiences to the phenomenon that was Girl Power.

Acquiring Fiscal Help for Re-Roofing Needs of Memphis Locals

You need a working roof structure, that's certain. If you constructed the house you stay in at this point and didn't simply buy it off the Memphis housing industry, then you have a pretty clear idea of the amount it can cost. Even so, there's a chance that you'll be taken aback at the sizeable price roof replacement holds--and this is a trouble you'd have to contend with eventually, as roofs don't last forever.

The cost of roof replacement varies according to the sort of material to be employed, the layout of the home, and whether you will tear off the old roof covering or build over it. In Memphis, roof installation can cost anywhere from $8,000 to $20,000 if you're employing familiar products. That's a fortune, and not many individuals can spend for that straight up. However, like most big-ticket expenditures, you can get financial aid for your reroofing Requirements .

Before looking for any funding selections, you should know the amount of money you will need. You can communicate with trusted roofers here in Memphis to ask about the rates of re-roofing with your preferredd resources. Acquire an intricate estimate from a contractor, as this can assist you with your mortgage request.

Phone your bank

Your bank is probably among the best finance organizations you can rely on, although you can also discuss with other lending institution in your location. These loan companies offer two kinds of renovation loans: secured and unsecured. Secured loans demand an item for collateral, just like an asset or a piece of property, although unsecured loans don't.

Seek advice from local government

Some local engineering offices or government units offer home repair funds that can help pay off roofing contractors Memphis residents seek the services of. Nevertheless, these financing options are in most cases only available to senior citizens or individuals with disability. It wouldn't hurt to ask, so phone them at any rate.

Contact USDHUD

The US Department of Housing and Urban Development also provides renovation financing for US citizens to help with the costs of residential or commercial roofing Memphis residents need. Various finance classes are offered, like cheap remodeling loans, credit home improvement loans, or fast home improvement loans.

Several residential areas give local residents renovation grants. They're willing to pay a roofing contractor Memphis residents seek the services of to make the city bode well, as you have to have the cash to fix your roofing; it's a win-win circumstance. Charlie Rangel Fends Off Challengers To Win NY Primary

By Edith Honan
NEW YORK, June 26 (Reuters) - Charles Rangel, a 21-term U.S. congressman and once-towering figure in New York politics whose stature was diminished by an ethics scandal, survived a vigorous challenge on Tuesday to win the Democratic primary.
The 82-year-old Democrat, who has represented Harlem in the House of Representatives since 1971 and is a founder of the Congressional Black Caucus, was running against a crowd of younger politicians in a redrawn district that is now heavily Latino.
In a defiant victory speech in Harlem, Rangel took a swipe at those who endorsed his opponents.
"If they didn't think after 42 years that I was the best qualified, I promise them that in the next two years they'll have no question about the fact that you elected the best," Rangel said.
Rangel's opponents included state Senator Adriano Espaillat, a Dominican-American who has strong Latino support, and Clyde Williams, who worked in the White House under former President Bill Clinton and got a boost when he won endorsements from the New York Times and the New York Daily News.
In an interview earlier in the day, Williams swatted down talk that he might be angling to run in two years, after Rangel's presumed retirement.
"This is not about any time in the future. This is about right now," Williams said, adding that he was the only candidate talking about issues like unemployment, achievement gaps in education and disparities in health care.
On 125th Street, Harlem's commercial spine, many voters approached on Tuesday night - younger people in particular - said they felt it was time for a change.

VOTER OPINION
"He's a legend. But he's everything that the Congress represents, which is complacency, just being too comfortable," said Salim Mhunzi, 27, a marketing strategist. He planned to vote for Williams who "knows how to maneuver with the DC crowd."
Others said they were solidly in Rangel's camp.
"He's been a staple in our community for years and years," said Thomas Berkley, a 53-year-old carpenter. "He's my guy. He's my man."
Once one of the most powerful members of Congress, Rangel now walks slowly through the halls of the Capitol with a cane.
The House censured him in 2010 for ethics violations, including failing to pay some income taxes, and he stepped down as chairman of the powerful tax-writing House Ways and Means committee. But Rangel retained his seat in the 2010 election. (Editing by Christopher Wilson and Philip Barbara)

Wildfire displaces thousands near Colorado Springs

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Reuters) - A wildfire roaring virtually unchecked near some of Colorado's most visited tourist sites kept some 4,800 people out of their homes on Tuesday on the outskirts of the state's second-most populous city, authorities said.

The so-called Waldo Canyon fire sent a mushroom cloud of smoke nearly 20,000 feet into the air over Colorado Springs near the foot of Pikes Peak, whose breathtaking vistas from the summit helped inspire the song "America the Beautiful".

Closer to the blaze, which has been fanned by stiff, hot winds blowing into the Southern Rockies from the prairies to the east, trees were visibly twisting from the heat of the flames.

Operators of a famous cog railway that carries tourists from around the world up the picturesque mountainside said the trains would remain shut down on Tuesday for a third straight day.

The highway that leads up to Pikes Peak has been closed since shortly after the fire erupted on Saturday, as has the popular Garden of the Gods, a city-owned park encompassing scenic geologic formations such as tall, rocky spires and oddly balanced boulders.

The closures around Pikes Peak, billed the world's second-most visited mountain after Japan's Mount Fuji, have drawn attention to the fire's negative impact on the tourism industry just at the start of the peak summer travel season.

After three days, the blaze has scorched an estimated 4,000 acres, and fire crews managed to carve containment lines around just 5 percent of its perimeter. The cause was under investigation.

No casualties or property losses were reported, but thousands of residents have been displaced by evacuations.

Raging through dry timber about 80 miles south of Denver, the Waldo Canyon fire had initially forced 11,000 people from their homes over the weekend, though residents from the town of Manitou Springs were allowed back on Sunday night.

As of late Monday, an estimated 4,800 people were under evacuation orders on the western outskirts of Colorado Springs.

One of them, Meg Duster, 27, stood watching the blaze from a safe distance at a fire command center. "I'm trying to remain optimistic, but it's so hard," she said, her voice quivering.

FIRE NEAR AIR FORCE ACADEMY

The U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs was still about 10 miles away from the leading edge of the blaze, though fire officials had earlier listed the complex as being in harm's way. A recreation area belonging to the academy was ordered evacuated due to its proximity to the fire, and all trails leading west of the school were closed, the base said.

The wildfire was one of about a dozen burning out of control around Colorado, including the monster-sized High Park Fire near Fort Collins, a university town north of Denver close to the Wyoming border.

"We're going to be continuing to have to deal with these fires for weeks to come," U.S. Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell said. "We anticipate it's going to be a long fire season."

The High Park Fire - the state's second-largest blaze on record and its most destructive ever - has consumed 83,205 acres in steep canyons since it was sparked by lightning two weeks ago. It is blamed for the death of a 62-year-old woman in her cabin and has destroyed 248 homes.

An estimated 4,300 people remain evacuated from their homes as that fire burns through grass, brush and Ponderosa pine.

In southwestern Colorado, the Weber Fire grew to 8,300 acres overnight but firefighters held it about one mile southeast of the small town of Mancos, east of Mesa Verde National Park. Roughly 50 homes were evacuated, officials said.

Meanwhile, in neighboring Utah, a fast-growing 39,000-acre (15,780-ha) wildfire continued to rage largely out of control on Monday after burning an estimated 30 homes and killing 75 sheep between the rural communities of Fountain Green and Indianola.

Governor Gary Herbert, who toured the fire by helicopter on Monday, estimated the property losses so far at $7 million. No injuries have been reported, but Herbert said fire officials did use a helicopter to rescue some shepherds from the fire's path.

MILWAUKEE/NARI OFFERS TIPS FOR YOUR LANDSCAPE ...

MILWAUKEE, WI ? You may be eagerly anticipating your home remodeling project and you?ve done the prep work ? clearing out the furniture, moving breakables to a safer place, planning how meals will be prepared and dishes washed, enlisting friends to help with child care, maybe even planning a night or two at a hotel. What?s left? The answer is your landscaping.
Just as fragile as the heirloom vase you?ve carefully packed away, landscaping needs to be protected during a remodel. Consider that there will be many tradesmen in and out of the house, delivery trucks, construction equipment, and of course, a dumpster.

With construction, you can expect your plantings and particularly the soil to be impacted adversely if they are in the line of activity.
To make sure you are adequately protecting that 100-year-old oak or the lilac bush that came from grandma?s house, landscape contractors who are members of the Milwaukee/NARI Home Improvement Council Inc., the area?s leading home improvement and remodeling industry resource for more than 50 years, recommend a pre-construction consultation with a landscape specialist as well as your remodeling contractor.
?In most cases, the contractor or the homeowner doesn?t think about protection until after the damage is done,? said Vance Barnes, Registered Landscape Architect, David J. Frank Landscape Contracting Inc. ?It?s something everybody needs to think about up front. Have a discussion with your contractor. Ask if the landscaping, and if not, what are the provisions for restoring it.
?The cost of renovating a landscape can surprise people,? Barnes said. ?It?s a good idea to know what that is going to be and put it in as a line item in the project budget. Just waiting until the end is not the best situation for anybody.?
The biggest issue with trees and grass is soil compaction from heavy equipment driving over it and from storage of materials such as dirt from excavation, lumber, shingles, and other building supplies. Compaction displaces the air space in the soil that is home to the root system, and without that oxygen, the roots will die.
?The first time you drive over that root system, probably 60 to 70 percent of soil compaction takes place,? said Bob Gansemer, ISA Certified Arborist, Buckley Tree Service.
Gansemer suggests working with the contractor ahead of time to minimize the area where equipment will be driven and designate a staging area for material storage.
Utilizing construction fencing to define boundaries is an option. Fencing should be placed not only around the trunk of the tree, but extending outward to at least beyond the drip line of the tree. Tree roots go well beyond the drip line, as much as three to five times the height of the tree, but this will help. A six-inch layer of wood chips can also be placed to cushion the soil and reduce some of the compaction.
An alternative is to dig up a tree or shrubs and have them moved to another location while construction is underway.
?We can take them to a temporary holding area, mulch them, and hold them until the project is done,? Barnes said. ?With a 96-inch diameter spade, we can move a pretty good size tree without it knowing its being moved. We are getting a significant amount of feeder roots, which are in the first 12 inches of the topsoil. Because we are taking about eight feet of soil with it, we are getting enough to keep the tree alive. It may suffer, it may go through some shock, but within a couple of years it will be fine. We can do that with pines, too.?
With remodeling construction, there are often grade changes, trenching and digging that could damage trees and shrubs. Grade changes of only a few inches can damage plants. One of the effects can be the natural drainage pattern, giving plants or trees too much water, or too little. ?Monitoring is important,? Gansemer said. ?We have a lot of heavy clay soil that retains moisture, so if you water every day you could be overwatering and causing problems. Check your plants every day. Stick your hand into the soil or pull out a plug. If it?s dry and crumbly, it?s time to water.?
Removal of trees in wooded lots can also have undesirable effect on those remaining. Before being cleared for development, the trees were genetically designed to grow in a group. Now a woodland edge has been created where those remaining trees are fully exposed to sun or wind, resulting in die-back or uprooting.
?If you live in a wooded lot, it?s natural to want to keep as many trees as you can, but you have to keep in mind you are changing the trees? environment,? Gansemer said. ?If there are trees that will be impacted, get an arborist involved up front to make recommendations to help minimize the impact on the trees and help them survive the construction process.
?It is always best to bring us in during the planning stages of the project to give the trees the best opportunity to survive,? he said. ?We have many more options for tree preservation before the project is started. We could also help in a situation where the homeowner wants to save a tree that really shouldn?t be saved because the impact of the project will be too significant.?
Shrubs and grass need protection too
Tom Ball, owner of Ground Affects Landscaping Inc. in Sullivan said that even power washing or painting your house could damage shrubs as they absorb chemicals and sprays. ?To keep paint and chemicals off of them, I would cover the shrubs with tarps or poly plastic during the day and uncover them in the evening (to release heat build-up),? he said.
Moving shrubs to another area of the yard is another option. ?Heel them in a shaded area, mulch them, and keep them well-watered. When the project is completed, you can re-transplant them, amending the soil with peat moss, Milorganite?, or a root stimulator,? he said.
Lawns will suffer damage too. Temporary plywood pathways or track mats will help keep the compaction level lower, but you will still need to address dead grass. ?I recommend aeration and then fertilization,? Ball said. ?You may also need to reseed, but the aeration part is very important to get air back into the soil and to get the roots growing again. Use a fertilizer that promotes root growth; I recommend a 12-0-20 blend.?
?For trees or shrubs, any kind of transplanting can be stressful, depending on the time of year,? Ball said. ?It?s a lot less stressful in the fall and the second best time is the spring. But if you are going to have an area excavated, you have to weigh out the cost of transplanting versus replacement.
?My biggest recommendation is to get a landscaper involved as early as possible,? he said. ?The earlier we get involved, the better off you?ll be to preserve and protect your landscape.
The Milwaukee/NARI Home Improvement Council was chartered in July 1961, as a Chapter of the National Home Improvement Council. In May of 1982, the National Home Improvement Council merged with the National Remodelers Association to form NARI ? the National Association of the Remodeling Industry.
The Council?s goals of encouraging ethical conduct, professionalism, and sound business practices in the remodeling industry have led to the remodeling industry?s growth and made NARI a recognized authority in that industry. With over 800 members, the Milwaukee Chapter is the nation?s largest.

The correct answer is precise. Insurance companies do not want individuals have the capacity to maintain a explanation for motion up against the protected. Those who obtain personal injury lawsuit financing are able to retain a source of motion for a lot longer time periods than these whom only depletes money and must abandon its states. case funding Legal professionals in addition land in a really hard problem when addressing consumers whom are lacking sufficient money. India breeze past Lebanon

Manandeep Singh led from the front to guide India to a 5-2 win over Lebanon in the AFC U-22 Championship in Muscat on Saturday.

Tears! They don?t always wet your eyes. Often they wet your heart. Your heart cries but your eyes stay dry. It?s a pain which you one can share with none, the pain of losing someone dear. After losing his grandfather three days back, striker Manandeep Singh, whenever in solitude, has howled. In public, his pain made him stronger as an individual.

He refused to go back to his hometown Hissar for the rituals. Instead, he chose Muscat, the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex, to be precise.

India opened their campaign by defeating Lebanon 5-2 in the opening match of the AFC U-22 Championship at the picturesque stadium. Manandeep paid the perfect tribute to his grandfather heading in a scorching header off a Lalrindika cross in the 16th minute to put India in the lead while Alwyn George slotted it past an advancing rival goalkeeper, Nazih Hassan, in the 39th minute.

He added one more in the 55th minute while Jeje Lalpekhlua scored his first goal in the 71st minute and completyed the rout in the 90th minute.

For Lebanon, substitute Omar Kurdi pulled one back in the 48th minute while Abdul Fattah scored another in the 69th minute.?

If that was all about the sacrifice, here?s something about the history. It was on this day that All India Football Federation was founded in Shimla in 1937. Even as former India Captain and legendary footballer, Chuni Goswami, unfurled the flag at Delhi?s Football House, which marked the start of the Platinum Jubilee Celebrations of AIFF, a new chapter unfolded on the green turf, that too against a team as technically equipped and physically strong as Lebanon.

The style was too possessive. The boys stayed as protective of the ball as if it was their girlfriend. They roamed around it all over, sometimes at a leisurely place, the next moment with a sudden run. Lebanon chased.

In the first half, India were more prepared; more organised. The practice sessions in Delhi and Dubai helped the team to acclimatise fast. Muscat, despite being more hot, was more homely for them than Lebanon.

Changing over, Lebanon reduced the margin almost immediately ? Omar Kurdi sneaking in between the two stoppers ? Souvik Ghosh and Deepak Devrani to slot it home. Suddenly it seemed, India were losing the plot and Arthur Papas, not much pleased in the momentum being lost, wanted to draft in Jeje Lalpeklua.

But even before Jeje replaced Manandeep, Alwyn George made it 3-1. Receiving it midway into the rival half, Alwyn snaked past three and placed it in the corner for his second goal of the match.

Abdul Fattah did tap in off a melee in the 70th minute for Lebanon but the very next minute Jeje announced his rival scoring the right corner of the inner box.

With no option left, Lebanon went all out. India stayed content in slowing down the pace for the rest of the match. Lebanon did try to press hard but it came too late. On the contrary, Dika hit the post which should have been India?s fifth goal.

Instead, Jeje made it 5-2 off a counter in the 90th minute.

It was a new resurgent India coached by 32-year Arthur Papas who played with more intent for a deserving victory.

In the dressing room, Manandeep couldn?t hold himself back. His heart was too wet by then and tears overflowed into his eyes. His teammates consoled him. Tears of pain? Or Tears of Joy?

?I wanted to pay my respect to my Grandfather. He loved me like anything,? Manandeep said. Alwyn came over put his arm around his shoulder and the duo walked towards the team bus. The rest followed.

Sacrifice; History; Future! All in one match!

Justin Bieber Forced To Play Unplugged Show After Apollo Power Outage

JB will talk legendary gig and much more on tonight's 'Bieber Live' at 7:30 p.m. ET/PT on MTV!
By Gil Kaufman

Description: Justin Bieber performs at the Apollo Theater on June 18
Photo:

Judging by the screams and massive crowds that follow him whenever he performs live, Justin Bieber has a penchant for blowing his fans' minds. But on Monday night during a private show at Harlem, New York's legendary Apollo Theater he also blew out the power grid.

According to the Associated Press, Bieber was forced to finish the show unplugged after the power went out at the venue near the end of the show. Most of the stage instruments lost juice and manager Scooter Braun said the problem caused the singer to improvise.

"Then we hear the fire alarm," Braun explained "Literally, the boy blew up the Apollo -- he heated up the Apollo." Before the show, Bieber tweeted that the gig was a special one for him given the history of the storied venue, which has hosted everyone from James Brown, Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder to Mariah Carey and, recently, former Beatle Paul McCartney. "A lot of emotions in the building," he wrote. "This one is special. This one is for MJ." A short time later, he joked, "Me and @ludacris blew up the power at the @ApolloTheater. Haha. Epic. #beastmode ... A night none of us will ever forget!! That is how u end an #AllAroundTheWorld run!!! With no power for the last song ... my fans sang it 4 me!"

The power outage only affected the stage instruments and some lighting and while Braun was told the problem would be solved in a few minutes, it went on for more than 40 minutes. Bieber tried to have fun with the glitch at first, joking that it was all the "hot girls in here," according to Apollo rep Nina Flowers, who ranked the snafu as a classic "Apollo moment."

The 18-year-old pro hardly missed a beat, jumping behind the drums for a solo and asking the crowd to serenade Braun for his birthday. Though he was happy to vamp for a bit, at some point Braun said Bieber got frustrated when the power outage went on for nearly an hour because the show was being taped as part of an NBC special slated to air later this week in celebration of his new album, Believe
.

He got over it and rewarded the crowd that had stuck with him during the outage by performing his hit single "Boyfriend" with some audience participation. "He walks out, he literally quiets the crowd, and he says, 'I'm sorry the power is out. . (But) you guys have always had my back. I'm going to sing 'Boyfriend' and you're going to sing it back to me,'" Braun said. Flowers didn't know what caused the power to run out, but she gave Bieber props for his professionalism. "He could have stopped; he could have not gone on and said, I did everything . but he came back on," she said.

Don't miss "Bieber Live"
 tonight at 7:30 p.m. ET/PT on MTV.

Story leads this month from new articles on parenting by the norm, the link between sexism and racism, death and the supernatural, how brands shape identity and more...

Parenting by the social norm

For parents, it is not only important to pass on to their children values that they personally endorse but also to teach values that they think are the societal norms, according to a new study. Particularly among immigrant parents, conforming to values that they perceive as norms is important. "Intersubjective Model of Value Transmission: Parents Using Perceived Norms as Reference When Socializing Children," Kim-Pong Tam (kevintam@ust.hk) et al., Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, online April 26, 2012 forthcoming, August 2012.

When sexism increases racism

Perceived sexism negatively affects women's attitudes toward racial minorities, according to a set of three studies. In one of the experiments, White women primed with sexism expressed more pro-White bias against Blacks and Latinos. The results suggest that perceived sexism triggers a threat to social identity, leading to bias against other stigmatized groups. "Do Unto Others as Others Have Done Unto You? Perceiving Sexism Influences Women's Evaluations of Stigmatized Racial Groups," Maureen A. Craig (macraig@u.northwestern.edu) et al., Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, online May 8, 2012 forthcoming September 2012.

Using nonverbal expressions to define social status

How do we decide who merits social status? We automatically judge people based on nonverbal expressions of emotion, for example body language showing pride or shame and that information sometimes even overrides information about the situation, according to a new study. "(Implicitly) Judging a Book By Its Cover: The Power of Pride and Shame Expressions in Shaping Judgments of Social Status," Azim F. Shariff (shariff@uoregon.edu) et al., Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, May 18, 2012 forthcoming, September 2012.

Death and the supernatural

Being reminded of death increases belief in supernatural higher powers among Christians, Muslims, and Agnostics, but not among atheists, according to new research. "Exploring the existential function of religion and supernatural agent beliefs among Christians, Muslims, Atheists, and Agnostics," Kenneth E. Vail III (vail.kenneth@gmail.com) et al., Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, forthcoming, October 2012.

Role of will in past and future

People tend to underweight their past failures when thinking about the prospect of future success. One reason for that, new study suggests, is that we consider our personal will to be more important in determining future events than past ones. "Whatever is Willed Will Be: A Temporal Asymmetry in Attributions to Will," Thomas Gilovich (tdg1@cornell.edu) & Erik G. Helzer, Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, online June 6, 2012 forthcoming, October 2012.

A threat to a brand as a threat to the self

When we identify with a commercial brand, we perceive a threat to the brand as a threat to the self, according to new research. Across four studies and two brands (Starbucks and Facebook), researchers measured attitude changes in participants who read negative editorials about the brands. "When a Threat to the Brand is a Threat to the Self: The Importance of Brand Identification and Implicit Self-Esteem in Predicting Defensiveness," Monika Lisjak (m-lisjak@kellogg.northwestern.edu) et al., Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, online May 18, 2012 forthcoming, September 2012.

DoubleDutch Debuts Pride, A Mobile-Only Yammer Competitor

pride-home-screenFollowing its $2 million Series A this spring, enterprise-focused mobile startup?DoubleDutch?is today introducing a new app called Pride whose debut?coincidentally arrives alongside?reports that Microsoft is after?a startup that could be Pride's competition: Yammer.??Like Yammer, Pride is also focused on workgroup collaboration, but, like most of what DoubleDutch does, it's not just mobile-first, it's mobile-only. Lawrence Coburn, founder and CEO at DoubleDutch, says the timing of Pride's launch is "kind of unbelievable, actually," given the reported Microsoft/Yammer deal.

EURO 2012 LIVE: Spain vs. Ireland

WARSAW, Poland (AP) ? Defending champion Spain plays Ireland in Gdansk, Poland, in their second Group C match at the European Championship. Earlier, Italy drew 1-1 with Croatia.

Here is a running account of Thursday's action. All times are local to Poland.

___

2124: The Irish are struggling to get out of their half and the intricate Spanish passing is a delight to watch. Five minutes left of the first half, still 1-0.

___

2122: Ireland's job is nearly made twice as hard by the referee - but not because of a contentious decision. As Keith Andrews is about to turn and run away with the ball, referee Proenca runs straight into him while looking the other way. Andrews falls over and Spain pick up the loose ball but cannot find an end product. The Ireland players are furous with the referee for not stopping the play as Andrews was down and Proenca knows he was a little bit at fault there.

___

2112: Xabi Alonso tries his luck from 30 yards after receiving a pass from Xavi from a corner. His shot takes a deflection which lifts it over the bar for another corner. Gerard Pique wins the header from the resulting delivery but it is wide.

___

2109: Iniesta goes close to doubling Spain's lead. He collects the ball from Sergio Busquets and creates an angle for a left-footed strike from outside the area. Given palms the ball away though with a stretching save. Good stop from Given but it is all Spain here.

___

2102: Spain linking up together nicely, the passing is short and fast and is pulling the Irish defense all over the pitch. They have a lead and know that Ireland will attack them if they have any desire to remain in the competition. Ireland can't attack without the ball though and they have seen very little of it so far.

___

2052: Andres Iniesta slides a crisp ball into the path of David Silva, who takes a touch before Richard Dunne comes across with a crunching, but good, challenge. Dunne gets up with the ball at his feet but is caught in possession by Fernando Torres, who steals the ball, skips across and launches the ball past Shay Given with a tremendous finish. Five minutes gone, Spain lead and Torres has answered those critics who slated him after misfiring against Italy.

___

2049: GOAL! Spain 1, Ireland 0 (Fernando Torres)

___

2045: Ireland gets the game underway.

___

2043: It's raining and a bit chilly ? and the Irish fans hugely outnumber the Spanish. But can Ireland really pull off what would be a major shock? They'll be out of the tournament if beaten by Spain and need to take at least a point from the clash against the defending champion.

___

2015: So, Fernando Torres returns to Spain's team, replacing Cesc Fabregas ? the player who scored the world champions' equalizer against Italy in the first match. It means Spain will once again have a recognized striker in its lineup, giving Torres the chance to redeem himself after missing a couple of good chances when he came on as a substitute against the Azzurri. Spain is otherwise unchanged. Ireland's only change is up front, where Simon Cox replaces Kevin Doyle.

___

2005: We'll turn our attention to the Spain vs. Ireland match in Gdansk now. Here are the lineups:

Spain: Casillas, Arbeloa, Ramos, Pique, Alba, Busquets, Alonso, Silva, Xavi, Iniesta, Torres. Substitutes: Valdes, Reina, Albiol, Martinez, Juanfran, Pedro, Fabregas, Negredo, Mata, Llorente, Cazorla, Navas.

Ireland: Given, O'Shea, St. Ledger, Dunne, Ward, McGeady, Whelan, Andrews, Duff, Keane, Cox. Substitutes: Westwood, Forde, Doyle, Kelly, McShane, Walters, Gibson, Hunt, O'Dea, Long, Green, McClean.

___

1956: Mandzukic was carried off on a stretcher just before the final whistle with a left leg injury. That will be a worry for Croatia coach Slaven Bilic ahead of the Spain game on Sunday. A draw was a fair result as Croatia maintains its unbeaten record against Italy. The 2006 world champions were the better side in the first half but Croatia was dangerous after the interval and could be a dark horse at Euro 2012.

___

1951: FULLTIME: Italy 1, Croatia 1

___

1945: Into injury time. With Spain its last opponent, Croatia could really do with getting qualification wrapped up early. A draw leaves things up for grabs heading into the final group games.

___

1941: Mandzukic sprints forward down the center with options both side of him. He finds Jelavic on the right, who takes a touch before trying to return it to Mandzukic but his pass is intercepted and cleared. Good chance for Croatia to get a shot away there. Will the team get another? Jelavic is off for Eduardo.

___

1935: Nine minutes left to play, can either side score a winner? You'd have to say the momentum is now with Croatia having pulled level and improved drastically in the second half. Riccardo Montolivo is booked after catching the back of Mandzukic's head when challenging him for a header.

___

1932: Croatia equalizes in the 72nd minute and it's Mario Mandzukic with his third goal of the tournament. His first touch isn't the greatest as he controls a cross from the left but his second makes up for it, lashing the ball in off the near post. Russia's Alan Dzagoev and Germany's Mario Gomez are the other players with three goals so far.

___

1927: GOAL! Italy 1, Croatia 1 (Mandzukic)

___

1922: With 70 minutes played, the Italians still lead 1-0. If the score stays the same, they would go top of the group ? at least for a few hours. Thiago Motta and Mario Balotelli have been replaced by Riccardo Montolivo and Antonio Di Natale for Italy while Ivan Perisic is taken off for Daniel Pranjic for Croatia.

___

1918: Italy midfielder Thiago Motta has picked up a yellow card for a tussle with Nikica Jelavic at a Croatia corner. At the other end, Balotelli, who has been quiet in the second half, powers a long-range shot over the crossbar.

___

1912: A smoke bomb is holding up play here and it has come from the Croatia fans, landing just next to the pitch. The Croatian FA could face a fine because of the conduct of their supporters.

___

1905: Modric has had two chances already after the break. His first effort dribbled through to Buffon; his second was struck much firmer but flies over the bar. It looks like the Tottenham midfielder will be playing further forward this half.

___

1901: The teams are back out and the second half is under way. No substitutions yet.

___

1852: Before the goal, Pletikosa made a great double save from Marchisio from close range. The goalkeeper was well beaten, though, by Pirlo, who has run the game from central midfield in the first half. He was one of Italy's star players when the team won the 2006 World Cup and he looks to have lost none of his class six years on.

___

1846: HALFTIME: Italy 1, Croatia 0

___

1842: He's been majestic all match and he's just put the Italians ahead in the 39th minute. Andrea Pirlo curls an exquisite free kick over the wall and into the net at the near post. Pletikosa got a hand to the ball but couldn't keep it out.

___

1840: GOAL! Italy 1, Croatia 0 (Pirlo)

___

1833: First signs of life from Italy striker Antonio Cassano, who drags a shot wide from an acute angle. Cassano made the headlines in the build-up to the game when he said he hopes there are no homosexual players on the Italy team at the European Championship. Hours later, he issued a statement apologizing that his comments "created controversy and protests from gay associations."

___

1825: Still 0-0 after 25 minutes but this is a lively game and there have been some good early chances. Croatia has come back into it after a slow start.

___

1818: Penalty shout from Croatia but referee Webb gets this decision spot on. Jelavic falls over as he challenges for a cross with Chiellini but it was the Croatia striker who did the pulling in the first place and is penalized.

___

1810: Italy is on top and Claudio Marchisio's shot from around 25 yards and is inches away from nestling in the top corner. Balotelli then smashes a fierce shot straight at goalkeeper Stipe Pletikosa from the edge of the area.

___

1806: The enigmatic Mario Balotelli was at the center of things against Spain and he makes his presence felt here early on by controling a cross from the left, turning and shooting just wide with his left foot. That was close. Much of the pre-match talk was about the head-to-head between midfield playmakers Andrea Pirlo of Italy and Luka Modric of Croatia. Pirlo has settled well already.

___

1800: Referee is England's Howard Webb, who was in charge of the 2010 World Cup final between Spain and the Netherlands. Italy kicks off.

___

1755: Italy is staying with its makeshift defense that coped very well against Spain. That sees midfielder Daniele De Rossi stay at center back after a very impressive performance in that match ? he plays despite having a cast on his right arm. Teams are out for the national anthems.

___

1748: Here's a tweet from former United States defender Alexi Lalas. (at)AlexiLalas: Ran into a squirrel on my morning run. Argued with him about who Prandelli should start up top. Squirrels love Balotelli.

___

1740: Having already beaten Ireland 3-1, Croatia will become the first team to qualify for the quarterfinals if it beats Italy. The Croatians have never lost to their opponents today so the omens are good, although Italy looked handy in the 1-1 draw with Spain on Sunday.

___
