Polls: Obama Holds Big Leads in Florida, Ohio, Pennsylvania

President Obama now holds his largest leads to date in Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania, according to three new CBS News/New York Times/Quinnipiac University polls released early Wednesday. The polls all show Obama easily clearing the critical 50-percent threshold in each state, largely as a result of his commanding advantage among female voters.

Obama leads Republican nominee Mitt Romney by 9 points in Florida, 10 points in Ohio and 12 points in Pennsylvania. The three states together combine to award 67 electoral votes, and no candidate has won the presidency without claiming at least two of them since 1960.

Florida and Ohio in particular are considered must-wins for the Romney campaign. Romney and his running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., kicked off a two-day bus tour of Ohio on Tuesday, where they told supporters they would win the state in November.

But the new polls suggest that if the election were held today, they would lose these three states, and likely the Electoral College. In fact, slight majorities of likely voters in all three states say they think Obama would do a better job handling the economy than Romney, the polls show. Compared to Quinnipiac polls conducted prior to the two parties' conventions, Obama has improved significantly on this measure in both Florida and Ohio.

The polls also show significant advantages for Democrats in the composition of the electorate. In each state, Democrats outnumber Republicans by margins of at least 9 percentage points -- though only in Pennsylvania is the change from the previous Quinnipiac survey statistically significant. Regardless, the polls seem likely to further ignite the argument over whether public and media surveys contain more respondents who identify as Democrats than will vote on Election Day.

Florida

Obama leads Romney, 53 percent to 44 percent, according to the poll. Four percent of likely voters prefer another candidate or are undecided. That is a significant increase from the previous poll, conducted prior to the parties' conventions in August, when Obama led by a slimmer margin, 49 percent to 46 percent.

The Quinnipiac poll shows Obama with a larger lead than other recent, public surveys. A Washington Post poll released Monday showed Obama with a 4-point lead, while a Mason-Dixon poll conducted for a number of in-state media outlets released on Sunday showed him leading by just 1 point.

Romney holds a slight edge among male voters, 50 percent to 47 percent. But Obama leads by 19 points among women, 58 percent to 39 percent.

White voters favor Romney, 52 percent to 46 percent, a significant increase for Obama from the previous poll, when he trailed by a 19-point margin among this bloc, 57 percent to 38 percent. Obama wins nearly 90 percent of black voters, while Hispanics also tilt to Obama, 55 percent to 41 percent.

Among white voters with a college degree, the two candidates now run even: 50 percent for Romney, and 48 percent for Obama. A month ago, Romney led by 14 points among this group. Obama has also narrowed the gap among white voters without a degree; Romney now leads, 53 percent to 45 percent, compared to a 20-point lead last month.

The poll also shows significant changes in how likely voters view each candidate. Obama is now viewed favorably by 54 percent of voters, and unfavorably by 42 percent. Last month, 50 percent had a favorable opinion of him, and 45 percent an unfavorable one.

Romney's image has taken a hit in the state. Just 41 percent of likely voters now have a favorable opinion of him, compared to 48 percent who view him unfavorably. A month ago, his image ratings tilted positive: 45 percent favorable and 42 percent unfavorable.

Asked which candidate would do a better job on the economy, Obama enjoys a slight edge, 51 percent to 46 percent. Obama also has the advantage on health care (54 percent to 41 percent), national security (52 percent to 44 percent), Medicare (55 percent to 40 percent), taxes (52 percent to 43 percent) and foreign policy (52 percent to 44 percent). Voters are split on which candidate would do a better job on the budget deficit, 48 percent to 46 percent.

Thirty-six percent of likely voters say they consider themselves Democrats, according to the poll, compared to just 27 percent who are Republicans. That is not statistically different from the 6-point advantage Democrats enjoyed in Quinnipiac's pre-convention poll, but it is larger that the 3-point Democratic edge measured in 2008 by exit pollsters.

One of the reasons why more Democrats are making it through Quinnipiac's likely-voter screen is because the enthusiasm gap between the parties has closed in the Sunshine State, according to the poll. Forty-eight percent of Democrats now say they are more enthusiastic than usual about voting this year, compared to 52 percent of Republicans who have more enthusiasm. Before the conventions, only 36 percent of Democrats said they were more enthusiastic, while 53 percent of Republicans said they were.

Ohio

Obama enjoys a commanding lead in Ohio, 53 percent to 43 percent, with 4 percent undecided or choosing another candidate. That is an increase from his 6-point lead in the previous poll, conducted just before the conventions.

Obama's lead in the new poll is only slightly larger than in other publicly available surveys. A Washington Post poll released Monday showed the president with an 8-point advantage in the Buckeye State. Romney aides told reporters on the campaign plane Tuesday that its surveys showed a much closer race.

Romney actually leads Obama by 8 points among male voters, 52 percent to 44 percent, but Obama racks up an overwhelming, 25-point lead among female voters, 60 percent to 35 percent.

Romney continues to suffer from a likability gap in the state. Prior to the conventions, just 39 percent of voters had a favorable opinion of him. That percentage ticked up to 41 percent in the new poll, but the percentage who view him unfavorably also increased, from 45 percent last month to 49 percent now.

Meanwhile, 54 percent of likely voters have a favorable opinion of Obama, and half approve of the way he is handling his job as president. Voters prefer Obama when it comes to handling the economy, 51 percent to 45 percent, a jump from the pre-convention poll, when the two were tied on this issue.

Democrats enjoy a 9-point edge over Republicans when it comes to party identification, roughly equal to the previous poll, which showed Democrats leading on this measure by 8 points. This is also in line with the Post poll, in which Democrats were ahead by 7 points.

Pennsylvania

The sponsors skipped Pennsylvania in the pre-convention round of polling (subbing in Wisconsin), but the latest poll shows the race is virtually unchanged since the last time Quinnipiac surveyed the state, in late July. Obama now leads Romney 54 percent to 42 percent -- equal to his lead at the end of July, 53 percent to 42 percent.

The Quinnipiac poll is in line with a Muhlenberg College poll conducted for the Morning Call of Allentown, Pa., and a bipartisan poll conducted for the Philadelphia Inquirer. Polls conducted by the Harrisburg-based Republican pollster Susquehanna Polling & Research for the state Republican Party and the conservative Pittsburgh Tribune-Review have shown a closer race.

The two candidates run even among men -- 49 percent for Romney, 48 percent for Obama -- but female voters favor Obama by a wide margin, 58 percent to 37 percent. That includes an 11-point edge among white women, 53 percent to 42 percent.

Republicans do have an enthusiasm advantage in the Keystone State, however. Forty-five percent of voters identifying as Republicans say they are more enthusiastic about voting than usual, compared to only 28 percent of Democrats who say they are more enthusiastic.

Still, 39 percent of likely voters describe themselves as Democrats, roughly equal to the 38 percent who did in late July. The percentage of respondents identifying as Republicans dropped, however, from 32 percent to July to 28 percent now.

Methodology

The polls were conducted Sept. 18-24. Quinnipiac surveyed 1,196 likely voters in Florida, 1,162 in Ohio and 1,180 in Pennsylvania. The Florida poll carries a margin of error of plus-or-minus 2.8 percentage points, while the Ohio and Pennsylvania polls have margins of error of plus-or-minus 2.9 percentage points.

(AP) ? This time, the Atlanta Braves held onto their big lead and locked up a playoff trip with plenty of time to spare.

It couldn't have felt any sweeter for retiring star Chipper Jones.

Freddie Freeman hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to put Atlanta back in the postseason with a 4-3 victory over the Miami Marlins on Tuesday night.

Freeman's dramatic drive off Mike Dunn clinched at least a National League wild-card berth for the Braves, who squandered a big lead in the wild-card race with a huge collapse last September.

"They took the attitude last year to try and hang on," Jones said. "This year we took the bull by the horns. We're shooting for the stars. We're still shooting for the division until they close us out."

Jones, who plans to retire at the end of the season, led off the ninth with a double. He moved to third on a wild pitch by Dunn (0-3) and scored when Freeman's 22nd homer easily cleared the center-field wall.

"There was never any doubt," Jones said during the clubhouse celebration. "We knew that last year was somewhat of a fluke."

Craig Kimbrel (3-1) worked a scoreless inning to help the Braves win their 22nd straight game started by Kris Medlen. The streak is the longest in the majors since the New York Yankees won 22 consecutive games started by Whitey Ford in 1950 and '53.

Last year's September flop was fresh on Medlen's mind.

"You can't really win consistently until you lose," Medlen said. "Losing's a big part of being able to win."

Returning to the postseason helps wipe away some of last season's frustration for the Braves, who blew an 8?-game lead in the wild-card standings and finished September 9-18. They missed the playoffs after one of the biggest meltdowns in baseball history.

This year, Atlanta cruised most of the way and wrapped up a postseason spot with more than a week remaining in the regular season. And the Braves still have a chance to catch first-place Washington in the NL East. They moved within four games of the Nationals, who lost to Philadelphia 6-3, with eight to play.

"It makes it all worth it. I'm happier for these guys because they worked hard," Jones said.

While he was being interviewed on television, the 40-year-old slugger was doused with bubbly and beer by teammates in a jubilant clubhouse.

"I am so cold right now!" he said.

Four of the five NL playoff spots are secured. In addition to Atlanta, Washington, Cincinnati and San Francisco have all punched their tickets to the postseason.

The second-place Braves have a comfortable cushion in the wild-card race, and St. Louis leads the chase for the league's second wild card.

The Braves will return to the postseason for the first time since 2010.

Jones went 1 for 2 with two runs and a sacrifice fly that gave the Braves a 2-1 lead in the sixth. He is batting .296 and has 14 homers with 63 RBIs. His leadership has been unmistakable in a season that included a final All-Star appearance.

The Braves tied it 1-all in the second. Jones walked, moved to second on Freeman's single and scored from second on Dan Uggla's single.

After Martin Prado's two-out triple in the third, Marlins starter Nathan Eovaldi struck out Heyward, but Heyward tripled with one out in the sixth and scored on Jones' sacrifice fly to give the Braves a 2-1 lead.

Freeman said he expected Jones to lead off the ninth with a hit.

"He's done it all year," the 23-year-old Freeman said. "That's what he's a Hall of Famer for. He got the rally started today."

Eovaldi was trying to win for the first time in six starts. He allowed four hits, two runs and two walks in six innings. He struck out eight.

A.J. Ramos got the first two outs for Miami in the seventh before Dan Jennings struck out pinch-hitter Jeff Baker with a runner on first. Heath Bell faced the minimum in the eighth for the Marlins, and Eric O'Flaherty did the same in the bottom half of the inning for Atlanta.

Donovan Solano hit his first career homer in the second to make it 1-0 and followed with a two-run shot in the seventh to make it 3-2.

"Yeah, I mean, we've lost a lot of games and to lose that game like that is heartbreaking," Dunn said, "especially with the way the team played today."

Medlen did not win for the first time in nine starts, allowing five hits, three runs, no walks and striking out eight. The right-hander began the game with a 15-0 record over his last 27 starts dating to May 31, 2009.

Those numbers were just a backdrop, though, to the bigger picture of Jones returning to the playoffs in his final season with Atlanta.

"We're not done yet," he said. "We've got one more step that we've got our eyes on."

NOTES: Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said MRI results on CF Michael Bourn's left thumb revealed no structural damage. Gonzalez hopes Bourn can return to the lineup Wednesday. ... Reed Johnson started in CF and hit leadoff for Bourn. ... Gonzalez spoke with Jones before the game and both decided that the 3B wants to start the last six remaining regular-season home games. ... Jones' double gave him 2,724 hits to tie Roberto Alomar for 57th place on the career list ? and for fifth among switch-hitters. ... Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen said RF Giancarlo Stanton, who has missed the last six games with a sore left ribcage, is lobbying to return to the lineup soon. Stanton took batting practice before the game. ... The Marlins were waiting for MRI results on OF Justin Ruggiano, who's been out since last Friday with a right shoulder sprain. ... Atlanta SS Paul Janish is trying to rehab his left shoulder in hopes of returning for the division series next month if Atlanta is still playing.

Proposed Communications Tower Sparks Controversy In Arnold ...

Posted on: 8:49 pm, September 25, 2012, by Shawndrea Thomas, updated on: 10:23pm, September 25, 2012

call tower

ARNOLD, MO (KTVI)? Controversy in the city of Arnold as residents protest a proposed communications tower in their neighborhood.

The communications tower would be built on the property owned by Declue and Sons Tree Car. Residents don`t dispute the purpose of the tower just the location.

A public hearing sign stands on the corner of Wicks and Telegraph Road in Arnold for drivers. Jefferson County 911 wants to install a new 300 foot communications tower on a piece of land close to homes. The only problem is the people who live nearby say it`s a hazard.? Rebecca Thomas is worried about how the towers can affect her health, property values and more.

?They have the 1- inch gas line right up there where anything can happen with a 19-inch gas line,? said Thomas.

We stopped by the Jefferson County 911 center to find out why the towers are needed.

Chief Travis Williams says the answer is simple. The towers are part of an FCC mandate to create a new state of the art radio communications system for emergency crews. It?s needed to link Jefferson County to, St. Louis County, St. Louis city, St. Charles and other counties in Illinois. Williams says there are 18 towers needed in Jefferson County so far 8 are approved. The total cost is $30 million.

?It?s for emergency responders, local Arnold police, law enforcement, sheriff`s department, EMS it?s for all of them,? said Williams.

Arnold`s planning commission denied the first tower proposal, now city council members have to make a final decision at their next meeting set for October 18th.

Credit Repair Anyone Can Easily Do | Fixing Bad Credit

You may be able to prevent forming debt simply by knowing exactly how much you owe and to whom. The time has come to fix your credit score with a little positive crisis management. The following article provides you with some simple and effective hints and tips to help you improve your credit rating.

When you pay your bills on time, you are keeping your credit score high. Late payments are added to credit reports and they can damage your chances of getting loans or a home in the future.

Avoid using your credit cards whenever possible. Use cash when you need to buy something. Pay off any credit card purchases immediately.

Credit Counseling

If you are having a difficult time creating or sticking to a budget, get in touch with a responsible credit counseling organization. They may be able to talk to your creditors and figure out a repayment plan; they can also assist you with your long-term financial goals. Credit counseling can give you the tools you need in order to keep track of your finances and stay out of debt in the future.

Make out a plan or program to pay off past due accounts and collection agencies. These accounts will still appear on a credit report, but they will be earmarked as paid.

Good credit isn?t worth much if you are in lockup. Sites may act like you can create new credit lines and tell you how to do it. It?s illegal to do this and you can get caught easily. Not only can legal fees add up, but you could end up in jail.

Credit Repair

You should locate a good credit repair company to help you. You have to watch out for credit repair agencies that promise more than they can deliver or are simply fraudulent. Many people fall victim to these scams every day. Check online reviews about the company, the Better Business Bureau, and even the State Attorney General?s office to find out what their reputation is before signing anything or giving them any money or account numbers.

If you have credit cards with a balance that exceeds 50% of your credit limit, you must continue to pay on them until the balance is lower than 50% of the credit limit. Once your balance reaches 50%, your rating starts to really dip. At that point, it is ideal to pay off your cards altogether, but if not, try to spread out the debt.

Credit Score

As you can plainly see here in this article, getting out of debt and repairing your credit score is more about common sense than you may have realized. Use the simple information from this article and you should have no trouble fixing your credit score

Colo. theater where gunman shot 70 people could reopen

The site of the worst mass shooting in U.S. history could reopen as soon as the New Year.

The Century 16 movie theater in Aurora, Colo., has been shut down since July 20, when a gunman opened fire during a midnight screening of "The Dark Knight Rises," killing 12 people and leaving 58 wounded. In August, the City of Aurora launched an online survey asking what should be done about the theater.

The majority of people who responded said they supported re-opening the theater. Those results were passed along to Cinemark, the owner of the theater, with a letter from Aurora Mayor Steve Hogan.

"We believe that we are hearing, and indeed have heard for some time, a collective wish and desire for the theater to re-open," Hogan said. He added that he had consulted with victims, victims advocates and community members about the decision.

Hogan asked for special provisions, including victim and survivor visitation, memorials and a possible change to the exterior appearance of the building to be considered.

Tim Warner, CEO of Cinemark, responded, saying the company would work with the city to determine the best way to re-open the theater.

"We pledge to reconfigure the space and make the theater better than ever," he said. "We hope the theater will be ready by the beginning of the New Year."

Panda Cub's Death Remains a Mystery

Veterinarians are still unsure what caused a week-old panda cub to die at the Smithsonian National Zoo, but they said Monday (Sept. 24) the newborn had fluid in its abdomen and a "slightly abnormal liver."

The 4-ounce (100-gram) cub had no outward signs of trauma or infection when it was found dead Sunday (Sept. 23) morning. Caretakers confirmed Monday that its 14-year-old mom Mei Xiang did not crush her baby.

"The only abnormalities the veterinarians have detected so far were some fluid in her abdomen and a slightly abnormal liver," zoo officials said in a statement. (The cub appears to be female, veterinarians said.) "They don't know yet whether either of those things is significant, and they're still investigating."

The Washington, D.C., zoo said the loss is "especially devastating." The cub's birth came as a joyful surprise last week following several years of unsuccessful attempts to get Mei Xiang pregnant. She had been artificially inseminated on April 29 and 30 with sperm from the zoo's adult male, Tian Tian, but it's almost impossible to tell if a female panda is pregnant until a cub materializes. The panda parents have only one other cub, Tai Shan, who was born in 2005 and moved to China in 2010.

In addition to investigating the cub's death, veterinarians are monitoring Mei Xiang's well-being.

"We fully anticipate that she'll return to her normal wonderful giant panda self in a relatively short amount of time," zoo officials said in a statement. "She appeared to sleep well last night. Watchers did notice her cradling an object, as she did before the birth of the cub. We believe this is an expression of her natural mothering instinct."

Panda keepers were first alerted to trouble when Mei Xiang let out a distress call Sunday shortly after 9:00 a.m. ET. Caretakers were able to get to the unresponsive cub an hour later and immediately performed CPR, but they couldn't revive the newborn, zoo officials said.

"The cub was just beautiful ? beautiful little body, beautiful face with the markings just beginning to show around the eyes," Suzan Murray, the zoo's chief veterinarian, said during a press conference Sunday.

As only 1,600 giant pandas are left in the wild, captive breeding is an important way for scientists to study and conserve the endangered species.

I.D. Bracelets for Your Flock | TBN Ranch

On my farm there have been many chickens over the years. Every chick originally belonged to a specific flock with a clever name that would reminded me of the year they hatched. For instance, the last presidential election my newly acquired hatchlings? became the flock named after after the wives of the presidential candidates, First Ladies.

As time went by new chicks were added and before I knew it there were birds from years ago mixed in with previous flocks.? It can be hard to remember which hen belonged to what flock, and what year is even tougher.

I decided to keep track of my birds by using an ankle bracelet of the same color for each flock. Now with just a glance I know how old a hen is by which flock she was a member of. This is nothing new to chicken keepers, but the ankle bracelets made for this purpose are pretty spendy. They come in a million sizes, none of which seem right, and they are all offered in bags of a gazillion. So, I came up with an inexpensive alternative.

Bright colored, weather resistant, easy to adjust for size, lightweight, and CHEAP. Neon Zip Ties! They are available at most any hardware, or electronic store, or you can get a whole bag for about $7? online at amazon.

?SNL? skewers Ann Romney, Obama, undecideds

On the second official episode of its new season, "Saturday Night Live" took a break from send-ups of Barack Obama and Mitt Romney to focus on some of the peripheral aspects of the campaign, including Ann Romney and undecided voters.

On "Weekend Update," Mrs. Romney--played by newcomer Kate McKinnon--defended her husband's recent gaffes, arguing that the campaign has been particularly grueling--and that the pair have sacrificed a major part of their lives in their bid for the White House.

"We're missing apple picking season," she said. "We love apple-picking season, Seth. It's like Mormon Mardi Gras. I once drank so much apple cider, I woke up the next morning in my bed wearing my pajamas."

McKinnon's Romney also dismissed the notion that she and Mitt are elitists compared to the Obamas.

"Did I miss something?" she asked. "Is hanging out with Jay-Z and Beyonc? a thing regular people do now? People are always saying I'm unrelatable because I had a horse in the Olympics. Well, let me tell you what: I would kill that horse if I could meet Beyonc?."

"Running a Republican campaign is so hard," she continued. "If you're a Democrat, you get to eat with cool people like George Clooney. If you're a Republican, you get to shake Jon Voight's cold lizard hand."

"Do you really think this would be going better if you'd nominated someone else?" she asked. "Who? Rick Santorum? Are you thinking you missed the boat with Newt Gingrich? If you think I'm unrelatable, check out Callista Gingrich. She's like a character from 'Mars Attacks.' At least my hair moves."

In a fake ad paid for by the "Low-Information Voters of America" political action committee, undecided voters aired some of their most-pressing questions.

"Who is the president right now?" one asked. "Is he or she running?"

"What happens if the president dies?" asked another. 'Has anyone thought about who would replace him? What's your plan, gentlemen?"

"Can women vote?" a female undecided asked. "Because if not, I've got a big problem with that."

"We hear a lot about our dependence on foreign oil but what is oil? What is it used for?"

But perhaps the night's best bit of political satire came during a rant by "Weekend Update" anchor Seth Meyers about Obama's seeming inability to take advantage of Romney's stumbles:

President Obama, what are you doing? Your poll numbers are looking great. Your opponent is in flames. I haven't heard Joe Biden's name in months, which is great. Then you come out and say, 'Hey, I can't change Washington from the inside.' I'm not saying what you said isn't true. I'm saying, why are you saying anything during this Romney tailspin?

I mean, let's review. On Monday, a secret tape is released in which Romney insults half of the country. And then that same day he stands by those remarks. On Wednesday, he does a town hall for Hispanics in brown face. Then on Friday, Paul Ryan gets booed by the AARP. And then, instead of just enjoying it, you go, 'Hey everybody! Remember my campaign slogan? Yeah, I can't do that.' Don't make this hard on yourself. You're like the criminal who gets away with murder and then starts sending the cops puzzles to figure it out.

Romney's campaign, Meyers added, is "getting crazier than the last season of 'Lost.' "Was Clint Eastwood supposed to be the smoke monster?"

If you live in constant?fear of dropping your iPhone and damaging the device, you'll be happy to know that the latest generation of Apple's smartphone is "easier than ever" to repair, according to a teardown conducted by a gadget?repair team.

As usual, the teardown?information comes to us via the folks at?iFixit.?

They opened up an iPhone 5 and found that it is pleasantly easy to open up. "The iPhone practically flew apart under our nimble spudgers," explains iFixit's Miroslav Djuric, before pointing out that the device scores a solid seven on a ten-point "repairability" scale.

"Because the iPhone 5 is opened front-to-back, replacing a cracked screen is going to be easier than ever," Djuric writes.?

For a step-by-step guide to tearing apart an iPhone 5, check out iFixit. And then come back here and tell us what you think about the device's bare guts.

The Jacksonville Times Union 9/21/12 edition reported comments by senior congressional officials voicing concern that congress is about to adjourn until after the November elections without passing?meaningful legislation so direly needed. With our Senate and House unable to agree on anything, probably not even the time of day, how is our government to run effectively with such disharmony? We have a president in office that has gained wide approval ratings, upwards of 47%, yet with disapproval ratings along the same lines, further demonstrating symptoms of a dysfunctional government. It concerns?us that if our Congress is unable to enact meaningful legislation, and our president is unable to positively influence our elected officials then sooner or later that void will be filled by someone or a small group of "enlightened" leaders who will make decisions for us, moving perhaps toward a dictatorship of sorts.

The news out of the Middle East continues to spell trouble for U.S. relations in that area, with rioting against the Western nations in general, and the United States in particular. We previously claimed Egypt as our ally, but not any longer with their government?being led by the Muslim Brotherhood which clearly has ties to organizations?with interests?inimical to those of the United States. And Iran, according to some, is close to perfecting a nuclear weapon, and a concern is not that they would launch an attack on the U.S., but that they?would give the ingredients for same to a rogue organization. Israel was a close ally, but our?President recently spurned an opportunity to meet with their very pro-American leader.

Where does?this lead us? What is in store for the many entrepreneurs and real estate investors? Uncertainty rules the day. Most folks are on hold awaiting the outcome of the presidential election, as much is at stake, and a major concern of many is that by and large our voters do not take the time to educate themselves, but are led by the smartest ad, or the person that offers them the most, not who offers the best opportunity for this country to cure it's ills, to right the ship.

Folks, this is a plea for all to read the papers, become informed, investigate the candidates, vote,?and do not be led by the brightest smile or a media with a "personal" agenda; check them all out.

Fear can be erased from the brain, research shows

ScienceDaily (Sep. 20, 2012) ? Newly formed emotional memories can be erased from the human brain. This is shown by researchers from Uppsala University in a new study now being published by the academic journal Science. The findings may represent a breakthrough in research on memory and fear.

Thomas ?gren, a doctoral candidate at the Department of Psychology under the supervision of Professors Mats Fredrikson and Tomas Furmark, has shown, that it is possible to erase newly formed emotional memories from the human brain.

When a person learns something, a lasting long-term memory is created with the aid of a process of consolidation, which is based on the formation of proteins. When we remember something, the memory becomes unstable for a while and is then restabilized by another consolidation process. In other words, it can be said that we are not remembering what originally happened, but rather what we remembered the last time we thought about what happened. By disrupting the reconsolidation process that follows upon remembering, we can affect the content of memory.

In the study the researchers showed subjects a neutral picture and simultaneously administered an electric shock. In this way the picture came to elicit fear in the subjects which meant a fear memory had been formed. In order to activate this fear memory, the picture was then shown without any accompanying shock. For one experimental group the reconsolidation process was disrupted with the aid of repeated presentations of the picture. For a control group, the reconsolidation process was allowed to complete before the subjects were shown the same repeated presentations of the picture.

In that the experimental group was not allowed to reconsolidate the fear memory, the fear they previously associated with the picture dissipated. In other words, by disrupting the reconsolidation process, the memory was rendered neutral and no longer incited fear. At the same time, using a MR-scanner, the researchers were able to show that the traces of that memory also disappeared from the part of the brain that normally stores fearful memories, the nuclear group of amygdala in the temporal lobe.

'These findings may be a breakthrough in research on memory and fear. Ultimately the new findings may lead to improved treatment methods for the millions of people in the world who suffer from anxiety issues like phobias, post-traumatic stress, and panic attacks,' says Thomas ?gren.

- Watchers:
Watchers have the ability to foresee the future to varying degrees. As knowledge of the future invariably causes that future to change, Watchers' visions of the future in their direct sphere of influence are subject to frequent shifting. Watchers' visions are like a sense of deja vu. Watchers can get visions at will. Drinking alcoholic beverages can temporarily enhance a Watcher's abilities.

- Movers:
Movers are powerful telekinetics who are trained to identify the specific atomic frequency of a given material and alter the gravitational field around it, usually causing the nearby air to appear warped. This allows them to move both animate and inanimate objects. Advanced Movers can work at the molecular level, creating energy shields in the air around them or create power fists and kicks, a strike that delivers three times the power of a normal punch.

- Pushers:
Pushers have the ability to implant memories, thoughts and emotions into the minds of other people in order to manipulate them. The skill level of the Pusher determines how many people the Pusher is able to control at one time, and how vivid the implanted memories are. A powerful Pusher can push a large group of people at the same time, basically creating a personal army. A Pusher is able to make a person do anything the Pusher desires, even commit suicide. A Pusher's eyes indicate how powerful they are: their pupils will dilate to certain degrees depending on how powerful the push is.

- Bleeders:
Bleeders have the ability to emit high-pitched sonic vibrations that cause ruptures in a target's blood vessels. While using this ability, their pupils turn into vertical slits, like a snake's, because of synthetic materials implanted in them to protect the blood vessels from the effects of their own ability. They are also sometimes known as Screechers or Screamers.

- Sniffs:
Sniffs are highly developed psychometrics who can track the location of people or objects over varying distances. Like bloodhounds, their ability is increased if they have tactile access to an object that has been in direct contact with the subject. Sniffs receive information in the form of images, which is why identifiable landmarks help increase their effectiveness.

- Shifters:
Shifters can temporarily alter the appearance of an object by manipulating patterns of light interacting with it. Once the illusion is established, it remains with the object for a short period of time. For example, a Shifter could touch a one dollar bill and alter it to appear as a one hundred dollar bill until the effect expires. The object shifted must have roughly the same dimensions as the object it is shifted into. The length of time that the effect will last is based on the Shifter's experience.

- Wipers:
Wipers are skilled at either temporarily or permanently erasing memories, an invaluable asset in espionage. Experience will dictate the accuracy of their wipes, though there is always the danger that they will eliminate a desired memory. Wipers need to be in contact with the person(s) they choose to wipe.

- Shaders:
Shadows are trained to block the vision of other clairvoyants, such as Sniffs, making any subject within their target radius appear "dark". Experience will enhance the size of the area they can shadow and the intensity of their shielding effect. Shadows need to be awake to manifest their ability, so it is common for a detail of two Shadows to operate in shifts while protecting a person or object for extended periods. Most Shadows are effective only against Sniffs, but some extremely powerful Shadows are able to block even Watchers.

- Stitches:
Stitches are psychic surgeons trained to quickly reconstruct cells to their previous or healthy state. Using only their hands, they can heal and even un-heal whatever they have done. They must be in contact with the person in order to use their powers. For more detailed work, Stitches use a silver-based cream on their hands which acts as a conductor for their ability.

- Jumper:
Jumpers are people who can Teleport, anywhere with just a simple thought.

Analysis: China worries spur Mexico stock market flows

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexico has been on the wrong side of China's economic boom for the last decade, but is now seeing an upturn in its fortunes as the Asian powerhouse's economy slows and international stock pickers look to hedge their bets.

Fund managers are shifting the composition of their portfolios to protect themselves against further slowing in China. That is bad news for exporter Brazil, but good news for Mexico, which has low trade exposure to Asia and which is starting to claw back the export share and wage competitiveness it lost to China.

After China joined the World Trade Organization in 2001, Brazil boomed due to a seemingly endless Chinese appetite for soybeans and iron ore, while Mexico's manufacturers struggled to compete with cheap goods in their main U.S. market.

Brazil has grown almost twice as fast as Mexico in the last decade and overtook its northern rival as Latin America's biggest economy in 2005, becoming a darling of investors.

But a recent soft patch in Brazil and a slowdown in China's breakneck growth are prompting some investors to take another look at Mexico's strong ties to the United States and the chances its new president will undertake major reforms that could push up growth.

In the seven months through July, foreign investors plowed $3.4 billion into Mexico's stock market compared with $2.9 billion in Brazil. That is no mean feat since the commodity-heavy Bovespa index of the Sao Paulo stock exchange has a market capitalization about three times greater than Mexico's IPC <.mxx>, which is more skewed to local consumption.

This upsets the trend of recent years. Brazilian stocks attracted $7.1 billion in net portfolio inflows last year, compared with $6.2 billion in outflows from Mexico. Brazil scored a whopping $37.7 billion in inflows in 2010, while Mexico attracted only $640 million.

"The pendulum swung too far," Claudio Brocado, who helps oversee about $5.9 billion in emerging market equity assets at Batterymarch Financial Management, said of the buy Brazil rush. "The pendulum has swung back in Mexico's favor. That tends to happen time and again."

Many still expect Brazil to rebound given record low official interest rates, a raft of government initiatives to boost growth and an expected wave of infrastructure spending ahead of the 2014 soccer World Cup and the Olympics in 2016.

Data from funds tracker EPFR, which is seen as a leading indicator for portfolio investment, showed the biggest inflow into Brazilian equity funds in three months last week, following China's approval of $150 billion in infrastructure projects.

China's 7 percent-plus growth still far outstrips the United States and Mexico, but this has almost halved from before the financial crisis. While the direct economic impact on Brazil may be limited, the effect is felt in the stock market, where almost 40 percent of stocks are linked to commodities and energy.

"The flows now are driven by the perception that Brazil's wagon is firmly hitched to China, which is slowing and changing its orientation in a way that reduces commodity and energy intensity," said Frances Hudson, global strategist with Standard Life, which manages $260 billion in assets worldwide.

The share price of Brazilian miner Vale , the world's largest iron-ore exporter, has fallen in tandem with Chinese ore prices and BlackRock fund manager William Landers said he has moved from overweight to close to neutral on the company.

"In the equity market, it definitely has a bigger influence because of Vale," Landers said of China's slowdown. "China still sets the steel price, sets the pulp and paper price."

REGAINING AN EDGE

Brazil still accounts for two-thirds of the $4.7 billion Latin American Fund that Landers manages, but he has increased exposure to consumer-oriented stocks recently instead of those that might take a hit from China.

In Mexico, BlackRock likes drinks company Femsa , which owns the successful Oxxo convenience stories, and cell phone company America Movil - both indirect beneficiaries of the country's strong exports to the United States.

While still recovering from recession, the United States is expanding more strongly than most developed economies - especially in Europe - and the U.S. Federal Reserve's new round of stimulus underscores its commitment to growth.

"If export industries are doing well and those folks want to buy cell phones, that's where America Movil benefits," Landers said, adding he also likes broadcaster Televisa .

Mexico's export growth caught up with China's in 2010, when the country also began to win back some of the U.S. market. It now has a record 12.9 percent share of goods imported by the United States, just short of China.

Finance ministry officials point to a narrowing wage gap in manufacturing as Chinese labor becomes more costly. In 2007, hourly Mexican manufacturing wages were 238 percent higher than in China, but are now just 7 percent higher.

As well as proximity to the United States, Mexico also enjoys strong patent protection. Barclays Capital also says that specialization in high-value sectors such as autos and telecommunications equipment has helped manufacturers gain an edge over China.

Mexico has a particular advantage in bulky goods, which can take four to five weeks to ship from China. The country is the world's biggest exporter of flat screen TVs, the second biggest exporter of two-door refrigerators and freezers and the fourth biggest exporter of cars, according to government data, while the aerospace industry is also growing rapidly.

Canada's Bombardier Inc can truck a nearly-finished Learjet 85 from its plant in the central state of Queretaro to Wichita, Kansas, for final assembly in two days, according to Mexican quality manager Norman Thompson.

SWEET SPOT TO LAST?

In contrast with Brazil's strong commodity weighting, Mexico's IPC stock index is two-thirds composed of consumer stocks such as telecommunications, retailing and beverages.

Batterymarch's Brocado said this helped explain the IPC's performance this year. The index is up nearly 9 percent in 2012 and is heading for record highs compared with a 7 percent gain for the Bovespa, which almost all came in the last two weeks after China boosted infrastructure spending.

"The index in Mexico is more defensive," said Brocado, referring to stocks that provide a constant dividend and stable earnings. "Index composition has acted in Mexico's favor in terms of relative performance."

Thomson Reuters' Lipper data show that funds with an investment focus on Brazil returned an average 6.74 percent in the eight months through August versus an average 8.17 percent return for funds focused on Mexico.

Still, the buying has made Mexican shares expensive compared with Brazilian stock. As of Friday, the MSCI Mexico index was trading at 16.5 times forecast earnings and the MSCI Brazil index was trading at 10.4 times.

Federated Investors fund manager Audrey Kaplan said this made Brazilian stock a good buy, given forecasts for average earnings growth of 18 percent to 20 percent over the next year.

"That gives you a good opportunity to get in when the market is lower," said Kaplan, who manages $500 million in equities.

Edwin Gutierrez, portfolio manager for Aberdeen Asset Management, said Brazil would attract a flood of investment if it dropped its IOF financial transactions tax, which is typical of the ad-hoc capital controls that annoy investors. Mexico has eschewed such controls.

"Foreign capital is welcome (in Mexico). There's a big checkered flag saying 'come in,' whereas in Brazil there is a stop sign," he added.

French court rules in favor of William, Kate

A French court on Tuesday ordered the publisher of a gossip magazine to hand over all digital copies of topless photos of Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge and wife of Prince William, and blocked the further publication of the images.

Under the ruling, the magazine Closer cannot publish the images of an intimate moment in the south of France any further, including on its website and tablet application, The Associated Press reported. The magazine published 14 photos of a partially clad Kate in its pages on Friday.

Separately, the court in Nanterre, near Paris, opened a criminal investigation into both the magazine and the photographer.

The royal couple are currently on a tour of the South Pacific.

During their stop in Honiara, the capital of the Solomon Islands, William and Kate appeared relaxed, easy-going, and warm during an informal conversation with NBC News.

But if the royal family had hoped to block international publication of the topless photos, it was too late.

The photos show Kate slipping off her bikini top, relaxing on a sun lounger and at one point pulling down the back of her bikini bottoms while in the south of France.

Buckingham Palace has called the photo spread a "grotesque" invasion of the royal couple's privacy.

British newspapers, fighting for their reputation after a string of scandals, have agreed not to publish the images, as has the British edition of Closer which is managed separately, and instead are condemning the photographer.

The Sun tabloid screamed: "Find Le Rat" on its front page on Tuesday and said the photographer would be hunted down and faced jail.

On Monday, the publisher of tabloid The Irish Daily Star suspended its editor after the newspaper broke ranks with Irish and British peers, publishing pages from Closer with the photographs in its Saturday edition.
