Settling For Less | COMINGHOME REAL ESTATE

Here?s another post from my ?News You Can Use? Client newsletter?

Homeowners are often tempted to sell ?by owner? thinking they?ll make more money on the sale by not having to pay anyone a commission. But going the FSBO (For Sale By Owner) route could actually end up costing you ? literally.

Statistics have shown that the average selling price of a FSBO home is significantly lower than the average selling price of a home sold with the help of a professional real estate representative. Why do so many FSBO sellers make less money on their home sale than they would have if they?d worked with a real estate licensee?

As do-it-yourself sellers tend to factor in sentimental value when establishing their asking price, and because they don?t have access to the information needed to assess their home?s market value (like comparable sales statistics), many FSBO sellers overprice their properties, which is the top reason why many FSBOs fail to sell.

In addition, FSBO sellers often don?t have enough time or money to devote to marketing their property, nor do they necessarily have access to the Multiple Listing Service? (MLS?). This means a lack of exposure to buyers, as well as to real estate professionals who use the MLS? to find homes for the clients they represent.

A home that?s overpriced and underexposed isn?t going to generate much interest and, as such, won?t attract as many offers. As a result, the property lingers on the market, and as the FSBO seller becomes increasingly desperate to sell, their asking price gets slashed ever lower.

Obama and Romney together: Chili, not chilly

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Three weeks after the election, Mitt Romney made it to the White House.

For about 90 minutes. After an odd arrival in which a man rushed his SUV and ended up getting arrested by the Secret Service.

It wasn't the start of a term as Romney had envisioned. But it was, at least, all on good terms with the man who defeated him, President Barack Obama.

Over a private lunch on Thursday, Obama and Romney had some white turkey chili, Southwestern grilled chicken salad and ? from the reports of it ? the kind of actual conversation that never happens while two presidential nominees are bashing each other's ideas during a campaign.

They shook hands in the Oval Office. They spoke of American leadership in the world. They pledged to keep in touch. Maybe even work together.

All that, at least, according to a White House statement about what happened behind closed doors. The two men themselves never faced reporters.

"Each man wanted to have a private conversation," said White House spokesman Jay Carney. "They didn't want to turn it into a press event."

Much has happened already in American politics since the Nov. 6 election, when voters ended a fierce presidential race by choosing Obama in convincing fashion. Romney is among those who have opined on why he lost, telling donors Obama won by giving "gifts" to groups like Latinos, blacks and young voters.

Carney said that comment, widely panned as disparaging by leaders of both parties, did not hang over the postelection meeting of the two men.

The spokesman underscored Obama's interest in listening to Romney's ideas.

Obama presumably did so without accusing his former rival of having "Romnesia" about his own positions, as the president had once charged with a wicked smile.

Long gone too, it seemed, was Romney's accusation over the summer that Obama was running a "campaign of division and anger and hate."

"Gov. Romney congratulated the president for the success of his campaign and wished him well over the coming four years," the White House statement said.

And this: "They pledged to stay in touch, particularly if opportunities to work together on shared interests arise."

Romney adviser Eric Fehrnstrom agreed that it was a "very friendly lunch" between two men who spoke about the big challenges facing the nation.

Still, Romney did not get the warmest of welcomes coming into the White House gates.

The Secret Service said a man interfered with his vehicle as it arrived at a secure checkpoint near the White House. The man was later interviewed by an officer and became combative, the Secret Service said. He was charged with assault on a police officer and unlawful entry.

As for the meeting that followed, aides familiar with both sides said it amounted to political symbolism and a promise kept but that it had no substantive or specific agenda. Obama had told the watching world on election night that he would sit down with Romney in the weeks ahead.

That they did, in the dining room just off the Oval Office.

As much as the bitter campaign consumed 2012, it faded remarkably quickly. Obama is in a fiscal fight with Congress, with the economy at stake.

Romney has largely disappeared from the public eye.

Republican officials said they had little expectation the meeting would produce any meaningful results. They said that while Romney was the face of the GOP for much of the year, he did not command enough following among the party's passionate voters or chattering class to maintain a leadership role going forward.

The same is not true of Romney's running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, who also met privately with Romney in Washington on Thursday.

Self Improvement Times: 3 Simple Steps For Spiritual And Financial ...

Are you living in a state of debt? It's not just about the money. Even the richest people are in a state of debt. Prosperity and abundance are the new wealth. You can get out of debt, and all it takes is a shift in your thoughts. It's time to create balance, banish negative thinking, and work on your spiritual fitness. Debt is a state of mind created by erroneous thoughts about people around us, or connected to us, and situations we usually can't control.

In order for anything to change at all, you have to change your way of thinking. Norman Vincent Peale said, "Change your thoughts and you change your world." You have all the abundance you need right now. You just have to access that abundance. It is not easy, but what worth doing ever is? You have to do the work to change your mindset because this is a shift that starts internally. You can make external shifts to manage debt, but if you don't make internal, more pragmatic shifts, it is all for naught; you cannot make lasting change without a change in consciousness.

It may surprise you to learn that debt is not just about money. Debt occurs when we hold on to negative, unforgiving thoughts about people and situations, thoughts that actually block our prosperity and keep us in a state of lack. Abundance on the other hand, is a state of consciousness that acknowledges that we have many, many resources that we can use. It all starts up top… from your mind down. This article details step one in eliminating your debt mindset and creating spiritual and financial fitness, so read on, my friend.

The first step for attaining spiritual and financial fitness is TO RELEASE THE OLD--mentally, emotionally and physically-- and make space for what is for your highest good. You must get rid of clutter, which is a block for your energy, and let go of things and thought patterns you no longer need.

First things first--Do some forgiveness work. Make a list of people you need to forgive… and who you think need to forgive you, and work with that list. Do some sort of ritual or visualization to forgive or write out forgiveness statements. I know forgivness work isn't exactly the most fun activity, probably far from it in fact, but this is a necessary step to your abundant life.

The unforgiving energy you are holding against these people drains your energy. You're giving them permission to hang out in your mind; in fact, you're giving them a guest room there! You're making them comfortable, offering them a comforter, a cup of cocoa, your HARD-EARNED ENERGY that is stuck in unforgiveness. It's time to let go of that mental junk--for yourself, not them!

On a physical level, it's time for you to clear out the clutter in your living and work space. In the ancient Chinese art of Feng Shui, clutter is a block for your energy. If you have piles of stuff in your living room, hallway, and bedroom, it's hard for you to move around your house. It's blocking you and your energy from flowing well. Get rid of the stuff you don't need and the stuff you don't even like. If you don't like it, why on earth are you keeping it?

Give all that extra stuff away to someone else who will cherish it. If you look around, you will see things you've outgrown or things you didn't really need in the first place. What about that old tea set that doesn't match your decor? Or that paisley print top you bought because it was on sale? Think of someone else it would be perfect for and give it to them. They will feel abundant because you thought of them--and you will be free of extra "stuff" that is taking up room you could use for something you truly love.

Remember that there are also numerous charities you can donate to. You can even increase your prosperity by writing off these things on your taxes. You can sell items on Craig's List and donate the money to charity. You can keep the money and tithe it back to something that nourishes you… life coaching, your church, or even your fitness organization or instructor. Wouldn't your yoga instructor love that paisley-print top stuck in the back of your closet by the way?

There is something else that impedes our spiritual and financial fitness. In fact, the first thing people give up when they get too busy is their "me time." They forfeit the time they spent walking or meditating or praying in order to take stock of their dis-order. You have to take a mental break or you just might have a mental break. There's no reason you would give up the food that supports your body. Why give up the "food" that supports your soul?

Whether you are sitting still or exercising, use meditation or prayer to push away the mental clutter. No matter what, I practice the Reiki Method of Natural Stress and Pain Relief every morning. I've been practicing for twenty years now and I can't start the day without it. I'm not a morning person, so my Reiki practice helps get me out of bed and start my day off on the right foot.

So here are your action steps, friend. For the first step of releasing the old, I want you to focus on clearing the clutter, on all levels, and start in the right direction. Make your forgiveness list. Forgive the people on it. De-clutter your house. Purge your closet, your house, your garage, your car, your cubby, whatever! And remember to take care of you. After all, you must take care of yourself before you take care of everyone else. Trust me on this one; you will feel better and be better for it.

Don't forget to stay tuned for the next article in this series in which you will find out about another vital step to your spiritual and financial fitness. Let's get you trained and ready for a prosperity marathon, shall we?

Apple scores another patent victory over Samsung in the Netherlands

It's always the same. The two companies continue to play tit-for-tat with their patents around the world. Apple's so-called rubber-banding patent has been particularly contentious. It played a central role in a German injunction against Motorola and was invalidated by the USPTO. Now the bounce-back scrolling effect has given Cupertino an other feather in its cap in the Netherlands. However, the Dutch court has chosen to be much more measured in its doling out of punishment. There will be no injunction, instead the manufacturer will be given eight weeks to update the offending handsets -- anything running Gingerbread or Froyo. Newer versions of Android, namely Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean, use a subtle blue glow to indicate the end of the line. For every day longer than eight weeks it takes to either issue updates or remove the aging devices from the market Samsung will be fined $100,000, but Lee Kun-hee has probably lost more cash than that in his couch cushions. Next week we're sure this same patent will be thrown out the window by French officials or Apple will be found to violate some Motorola patent... and around we go.

UMaine women?s hockey prepares for Boston College after bout with Russia

Posted on Nov. 28, 2012, at 1:50 p.m.

After losing to rival UNH 2-1 back on Nov. 17, the University of Maine women?s hockey team enjoyed their Thanksgiving by taking on the Russian National team last Thursday.

The Russians have been holding a camp in New England while playing a series of games against women?s hockey clubs around the area, including matchups against Northeastern University, Boston University, Harvard, the Boston Blades and UMaine.

Although Russia eventually took the exhibition 3-0, UMaine Head Coach Maria Lewis thought the contest could have easily tilted the other way.

?I thought we controlled most of the puck possession time,? she said. ?We just didn?t get it done. We didn?t score goals. We didn?t capitalize on all the power play opportunities we had.?

Lewis said she looks forward to playing national teams again in the future, but wants her squad to improve from those matchups rather than take steps back.

?Russia?s a team we can beat. I?m hoping that players can gain some type of confidence in knowing that they can skate and be on the ice with national team players.?

With a 2-8-1 record so far, this young Black Bears team has struggled out of the gate. Lewis said they shouldn?t worry about what their record is at this point, but says her team has a tendency to be affected by their opponent?s reputation at times.

?It doesn?t matter who we play. We need to learn that we can?t be afraid of what our image of our opponent is,? Lewis said. ?Hopefully they?ll just take things at face value and just go into a game knowing that we have to do what we have to do and play our best regardless of who our opponent is.?

Lewis said all three goalies ? senior Kylie Smith, freshman Meghann Treacy and senior Brittany Ott ? played as expected against the Russians, with each getting a period of ice time.

Although each gave up one goal, Lewis said she is leaning towards starting Ott against No. 5 Boston College in game one on Friday, if only because of her past experience against the Eagles. Ott is 2-3-1 in her last six meetings with the Hockey East rival.

BC features a potent offense highlighted by a 4.2 goals per game average, led by Alex Carpenter?s 22 points. Despite the sophomore?s performance thus far, Lewis believes the Black Bears will have to play a team game in order to compete this weekend.

The Eagles feature a deep team around Carpenter, and Lewis says it will take an outstanding effort for the Black Bears to overcome BC?s skillful style of hockey.

?Some of it?s going to depend on if they bring their A-game or their B-game,? she said. ?If they bring their B-game and we bring our A-plus game, we have a great chance.

?The biggest thing, the key to winning this game is to have good gaps,? she added. ?We can?t allow them to build their speed and we can?t give them any space to move the puck or else we?re going to get beat. They?re probably the fastest and most skilled team that we?ll face and we really got our work cut out for us.?

Lewis said the Black Bears will have to focus on grinding out the game in order to slow the Eagles? attack and control the gaps on the ice.

?Every chance that our goaltender has to stop the puck, or freeze it, get a whistle,? she said. ?[Get] any opportunity that we can to kind of funnel them to the outside. Any chance we get along the boards to try and create scrums and slow things down that way. We have to do those things to win.?

Although BC experienced some early season struggles ? evidenced by bad losses to Boston University at home and a road loss to underdog UNH in their first three games ? Lewis thinks the Eagles? tendency to play down to their competition is behind them.

BC is 8-1-2 since their loss to the Wildcats on Oct. 21, including a 7-1 win against BU on the road and a 6-1 home victory over Providence.

Aside from a few individual rivalries amongst these two Hockey East squads, Lewis doesn?t believe BC is on the same level as a UNH or BU in terms of bitterness.

?I consider all teams in our league a rival,? Lewis said. ?But we don?t have a hatred for BC. We respect BC. We know that they?re a good team. I don?t think that who?s beaten who thus far is going to be a thought in BC?s head.?

The Black Bears have been without freshman defender Brooklyn Langlois since game two of the Bemidji St. series on Nov. 10 and junior forward Brianne Kilgour since early in the first period against Providence on Nov. 2.

Langlois has recently been cleared to begin her five-day progression back after suffering a concussion against the Beavers.

Kilgour has sat out the five games since she was knocked out of the contest with the Friars because of a muscle contusion in her lower back, but has recently begun to skate with the team again.

UMaine would welcome having two of their better special teams players back on the ice, but both Langlois and Kilgour remain doubtful for this weekend?s series with the Eagles.

Despite UMaine?s rough start and BC?s No. 5 ranking, Lewis believes her team won?t be overlooked by the Eagles, saying the Black Bears are a team ?that [BC doesn?t] want to lose to, but know they can lose to.

?I think they think we have great goaltending. I think they believe that we?re a feisty team that doesn?t give up. And I think they believe that we?re a team that, if they don?t play well, we can bite them,? she said.

The third-year head coach remains adamant that the win-loss column is not as important at this point in the year as executing their systems, but wants to see improvement in increasing their shot production, decreasing the number of shots their goalies face and staying out of the penalty box.

?I think our expectations honestly can?t be in the win-loss categories. It needs to be on the parts of the game that need improvement,? Lewis said. ?If we come out of [Boston] with some points, that?s a byproduct of us doing other things better.?

The Black Bears travel to Boston to take on BC in a two game series that starts Friday. Puck drop for game one is scheduled for 7pm in Kelley Rink, with game two set for 2pm the next day.

UMaine returns to Alfond Arena to take on Dartmouth in a non-conference matchup Dec. 8-9.

US, Russia name crew for yearlong space mission

MOSCOW (AP) ? NASA and Russia's Roscosmos have named the two men who will spend a year aboard the International Space Station to gather more data about the effects of weightlessness on humans.

NASA's Scott Kelly and Roscosmos' Mikhail Kornienko will take part in the mission set to start in spring 2015. The space agencies said in a statement Monday that the flight would help reduce health risks for planned NASA missions around the moon, an asteroid and ultimately Mars.

Crews so far have done only six-month stints on the station.

William Gerstenmaier, NASA's associate administrator, said the mission "will increase our knowledge regarding the effects of microgravity on humans as we prepare for future missions beyond low-Earth orbit."

Kelly and Kornienko will start training for the mission next year.

The Loosest Slot I Ever Knew . . .

On a recent family trip to Reno Nevada, we encountered a game in the downstairs fun center so loose it?d made my kids squeal with joy.

I look over and see both Alan and Joe jumping up and down with excitement by an arcade game called ?Dog Pound?.

You?d put a token in it and hundreds of balls would start bouncing up in side the machine.

If one of the balls landed in one of the hard to get in holes, JACKPOT!

The machine would spit out 100s of tickets.

Tickets you could exchange for toys and prizes.

When I think about the Dog Pound game downstairs in the Grand Sierra resorts, I think about you doing your first Joint Venture deal.

A good joint venture will stack the odds more in your favor for paying out than any other method.

It?s like playing your own loose Dog Pound arcade game over and over.

Fetal alcohol exposure affects brain structure in children

ScienceDaily (Nov. 25, 2012) ? Children exposed to alcohol during fetal development exhibit changes in brain structure and metabolism that are visible using various imaging techniques, according to a new study being presented November 25 at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA).

Alcohol use by expectant mothers can lead to problems with the mental and physical development of their children -- a condition known as fetal alcohol syndrome. Research suggests an incidence of 0.2 to 1.5 per 1,000 live births, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Costs for care of individuals affected by fetal alcohol syndrome in the U.S. have been estimated at $4 billion annually.

Advancements in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are affording unprecedented insights into the effects of alcohol on the central nervous systems of children whose mothers drank alcohol during their pregnancy. Recently, researchers in Poland used three different MRI techniques to better define these effects.

The study group included 200 children who were exposed to alcohol during their fetal stage and 30 children whose mothers did not drink while pregnant or during lactation. Researchers used MRI to evaluate the size and shape of the corpus callosum, the bundle of nerve fibers that forms the major communication link between the right and left halves of the brain, in the two groups. Prenatal alcohol exposure is the major cause of impaired development or complete absence of the corpus callosum.

The MRI results showed statistically significant thinning of the corpus callosum in the children exposed to alcohol compared with the other group.

"These changes are strongly associated with psychological problems in children," said Andrzej Urbanik, M.D., chair of the Department of Radiology at Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland.

Dr. Urbanik and colleagues also used diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) to study six areas of the central nervous system in the children. DWI maps the diffusion process of water and can be a more sensitive means than traditional MRI for detecting tissue abnormalities.

Children in the alcohol group exhibited statistically significant increases in diffusion on DWI compared with the other children.

"The increase of diffusion indicates neurological disorders or damage to the brain tissue," Dr. Urbanik said.

To noninvasively study metabolism in the brains of the children, the researchers used proton (hydrogen) magnetic resonance spectroscopy (HMRS), a common adjunct to structural MRI studies. HMRS results showed a complex collection of metabolic changes.

"In individual cases, we found a high degree of metabolic changes that were specific for particular locations within the brain," Dr. Urbanik said.

Electric cars: niche technology or the auto industry's future?

Despite the electric auto industry's current struggles and high costs, the future is bright for electric cars, Dikeman writes.

Electric Drive Transportation Association has the total number of US sales at just under 400,000 this year, or 3.3% market share including hybrids. ?Hybrids they have up 33% YTD compared to the whole of last year?s sales, and EVs/PHEVs up 375%. ?But the EVs still make up only 10% of that total number.

In June? The Street did a great article?on EV sales forecasting line by line an estimate of 62,000 for the year, already at 18,000 at that point.

And while?sales have been sluggish, they have been?creeping up, with more and more and cheaper and better versions coming out in 2013 and 2014.

The price gap, somewhere between $8K and $25K, is closing.

Nissan just announced a cheaper and longer range Leaf version in Japan (yes it can be done, why didn?t you have the guts to do this last year Nissan?), Tesla?s 160-300 mi range Model S just started shipping and garnered the 2013 Motor Trend Car of the Year Award.?

Peanut Oil Arthritis Treatment For Those Achy Knees

In today?s post I?ve got a quick tip for anyone who?s dealing with knee pain. While knee pain could be the result of an injury or strain to the tendons and ligaments of the knee joint, another possible culprit could be high levels of inflammation.

If you have swelling and/or sharp pain with movement, consult with a specialist. However, if you suspect the knee pain is a result of arthritis, there is an old school remedy that may be worth trying.

Applying cold pressed peanut oil to the knees. Peanut oil, are you kidding me? Nope, there?s good reason why there may be some truth to this home remedy.

More after the jump?

Cold pressed peanut oil is high in plant sterols and antioxidants. When applied directly to the skin, the oil can be absorbed through the skin and may result in a reduction of inflammation and pain.

While the mechanisms of peanut oil reducing inflammation are unclear, many individuals swear by this treatment as a way to provide arthritis relief.

My hunch is there?s something about the properties of peanut oil that works at the cellular level to reduce inflammation.

You can find cold pressed peanut oil at most health food stores. Simply apply some oil to your hands and rub in vigorously to the knee joint and surrounding musculature a couple times per day.

Consuming peanut oil internally doesn?t seem to have the same effect so I?d avoid that route.

Obviously I can?t provide you with a guarantee this will work, but it?s certainly worth experimenting with.

Arthritis is a condition that?s directly related to inflammation in the body. From a dietary perspective you?re best served to increase your consumption of alkaline foods like fruits, vegetables, raw almonds, etc.

Cut out the sodas, processed foods, sugars, and refined sweets. A Primal Blueprint type diet has worked well for many of my Charleston personal training clients who suffered from arthritis symptoms.

While there?s no magic bullet solution for the treatment of achy joints, I?d suggest taking an ?inside-out? approach for bringing relief. Focus on your diet first then look at natural remedies before running to your doctor for a prescription.

If anyone has found arthritis relief from using cold pressed peanut oil, I?d love to hear from you. Feel free to leave your comments below.

Yes, the Government Can Still Spy on Your Digital Life (for Now)

Ahead of a controversial Senate debate on digital privacy this week, the battle over warrantless cell-phone and Internet searches is beginning to take shape ? even as law-enforcement agencies continue to carry out the searches anyway.?Judges across the country have thrown out cases that used tracked digital American lives without warrants, but others haven't, reports The New York Times's Somini Sengupta. A DC court, for example, compared text messages to voicemail messages, which because they can be overheard are not protected by state privacy laws, argued one judge. A Louisiana court is deciding if cell-phone records are like business records. Another court ruled that GPS cell phone tracking without a warrant was fine, too. Others, however, argue that cell phones are more than just a paper trail. One judge called cell phones "raw, unvarnished and immediate, revealing the most intimate of thoughts and emotions," as in something that is subject to higher privacy standards.?Meanwhile, we see the same inconsistencies with Internet protections, reports The Wall Street Journal's Joe Pallazolo. A federal court recently ruled that people who use their neighbors' WiFi without permission forfeit privacy, opening up government officials to warrantless searches. The same ruling other courts have made for IP addresses. However, the law isn't that clear-cut, either, argues George Washington University professor Oren Kerr.?

RELATED: Anonymous's and LulzSec's Overlapping, FBI-Thwarting Pasts

Without clear rules, government agencies have continued investigations with warrantless searches. As people have started using cell phones?more often?and for?more than just calling, law enforcement agency requests for cell-phone information have increased,?reported? The New York Times's Eric Lichtblau earlier this year. AT&T gets more than 700 requests a day from various agencies, triple what it got in 2007, he notes. Last year, the total number of requests came in at at least 1.3 million. At the same time, the application for wiretapping warrants?declined 14 percent last year to 2,732, according to the?Administrative Office of the United States Courts. A curious pattern considering the requests for information have gone up.?Though these wireless carriers say they require a search warrant, a court order or a formal subpoena to release information, "in cases that law enforcement officials deem an emergency, a less formal request is often enough," writes Lichtblau. Or, it's possible that law enforcement has opted for other forms of tracking that don't require warrants, at least not according to some judges.?

A Senate debate beginning Thursday to make changes on the Electronic Communications Privacy Act might bring some clarity to these issues. However, it's unclear if the revised bill will give the government more or less power, and it doesn't sound like the vote will apply to all cell phone or Internet data. An early draft of the bill reportedly allowed warrantless e-mail searches, reported?CNET's Declan McCullagh. Since, Senator Patrick Leahy, who is spearheading the bill, has denied that the updates to the regulation will do that, however. Instead, the revised bill will require search warrants to get into email no matter how old, says Sengupta. That should presumably apply to some of our smartphone and Internet data, too. But it doesn't address text messages or location information, other concerns of consumers.

Israel steps up strikes, mobilizes troops

NEAR THE ISRAEL-GAZA BORDER (CNN) -

Israeli soldiers massed near the Gaza border Saturday as tanks and armored vehicles took up positions, raising the specter of an imminent ground invasion after Palestinian militants appeared to raise the stakes by firing rockets at the holy city of Jerusalem.

The mobilization of troops along the Israel-Gaza border follows news Friday that the Israeli government authorized the call up of 75,000 reservists, the latest move in Israel's days-old military campaign to stop rockets attacks from Gaza.

"We are in the process of expanding the campaign," Brig. Gen. Yoav Mordechai, an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesman, told Israel's Channel 2.

Convoys carrying tens of thousands of Israeli soldiers rolled toward the Gaza border Saturday, part of what the IDF described as 30,000 troops that were being mobilized along the Israeli-Gaza border.

The constant din of drones could be heard at the border, where a CNN television crew observed an Israeli forward reconnaissance patrol set up behind a tree line to avoid incoming rockets from Gaza.

Q&A: Gaza strikes could be beginning of ground attack

World leaders and the United Nations have called on Israeli and Palestinian governing bodies to show restraint, fearing at the very least a possible repeat of Israel's 2008 invasion that left at least 1,400 people dead.

Eight people were killed in Israeli airstrikes in Gaza on Saturday, raising to 39 the number killed since Israel's military operation, dubbed Pillar of Defense, began Wednesday, according to Palestinian government and health officials. Israel is reporting three deaths from a Hamas rocket attack in the southern community of Kiryat Malachi and at least nine injuries, including three soldiers wounded in a rocket attack.

More than 330 in Gaza have been wounded since Wednesday, according to Palestinian health officials.

For days, Israel has been using airstrikes to target what it describes as rocket-launching sites operated by Hamas and other militant groups. Israel airstrikes have hit more more than 830 targets in Gaza since the operation began, the IDF said.

On Saturday, Israel stepped up its air campaign, leveling the Palestinian Cabinet headquarters where a day earlier Egyptian Prime Minister Hesham Kandil met with Hamas officials, according to Hamas TV.

Israeli airstrikes also targeted the Hamas Ministry of the Interior, a police compound, the headquarters of senior Palestinian political leader Ismail Haniyeh and a Hamas training facility, according to a statement released by IDF.

"Overnight, the IDF targeted a terror activity site in the central Gaza Strip, deliberately located and hidden inside a mosque, in the vicinity of a school," the IDF said, accusing Hamas of using "the Palestinian civilian population as a human shield."

It was unclear from the statement whether the mosque was targeted in the airstrike. The IDF did not immediately respond to a CNN request for comment, and Palestinian officials did not identify the destruction of a mosque in its latest list of buildings and facilities damaged and destroyed in the Israeli airstrikes.

Palestinian militants, meanwhile, launched a barrage of rockets at southern Israel, including four that hit the coastal community of Ashdod, the IDF said.

One of the rockets his a house and another landed near a kindergarten, the IDF said. There were no immediate reports of casualties.

Among the airstrikes on Saturday, Hamas accused Israeli warplanes of hitting an apartment building in the northern Gaza community of Jabalia Camp, killing at least three people and wounding more than 30, according to Hamas-run al Aqsa TV.

Footage broadcast by al-Aqsa showed people clamoring over smoking ruins, searching for survivors.

From northern Gaza, Mohammed Sulaiman said he could hear bombs intermittently falling from Israeli warplanes as well as, from the other side, rockets periodically whistling toward Israel.

"The situation is totally dangerous here, and it is not safe to be out in the street," Sulaiman said.

The IDF said 380 rockets launched from Gaza had hit Israel since midweek, while 230 of those were intercepted by its missile defense system.

Among the rockets fired Friday were two that targeted Jerusalem, setting off air raid sirens. The rockets struck an open area south of the city, with Hamas claiming responsibility for firing the rockets toward Jerusalem.

Sirens sounded, too, in Tel Aviv, prompting people to scramble for cover, witnesses said.

No damage was reported, but Israelis consider the attacks on its major population centers to be an escalation, said Israel's ambassador to the United States, Michael Oren.

Israeli authorities said the military campaign has hit more than 600 targets for what it calls terror activity and stifled rocket launches out of Gaza, a claim denied by Hamas' military wing.

Analysis: Israel's strike on Gaza tests Egypt's resolve

Israel and Gaza enter a second day of deadly exchanges that erupted after a Hamas military leader was killed in an Israeli missile attack. Israelis maintain that deadly strike was in retaliation for Palestinian rocket attacks. ITV's Paul Davies reports.

By Ayman Mohyeldin, NBC News

News analysis

TEL AVIV, Israel - ?Unilateral Israeli military attacks are not unexpected in this part of the world, as the?wars with Gaza in 2008 and Lebanon?in 2006 show.?

In the past,?Israel, with help from the United States, could rely on the acquiescence of the Egyptian government to do nothing.?This week's attacks, the first large-scale Israeli operation since?Arab Spring revolts erupted and toppled governments throughout the region,?will seriously test whether the United States and Israel can still depend on Egypt's new government to hold the line.

Egypt's reaction to Israel's bombing was swift.

Baz Ratner / Reuters

Israeli soldiers watch as an Iron Dome launcher fires an interceptor rocket near the southern city of Beersheba on Thursday.

"The Israelis must?realize?that this aggression is unacceptable and would only lead to instability in the region and would negatively and greatly impact the security of the region," Egypt's President Mohammed Morsi said in a televised address on Thursday.?

In a post-revolutionary Egypt, one where the country's foreign policy is expected to be more closely aligned with the will of the people, the latest round of Israeli strikes is sure to test Egypt's willingness go along with Israel and the United States. More importantly, it will test whether the United States' international priorities still hold sway in Egypt.?

ANALYSIS: Israel, Gaza slide closer to war neither side wants

But whether or not the Israeli strikes on Hamas anger the Egyptian government, the key question is, what can Egypt actually do??

Egypt,?which has acted as a mediator between Hamas and Israel since 2007, recalled its ambassador in?protest to what it called Israel's aggression on the people of Gaza. It has summoned the Israeli ambassador to Cairo for a diplomatic dress down. ?It has also pushed for a United Nations Security Council meeting and will convene an Arab League gathering.

Egypt's ruling Freedom and Justice Party, and by extension the Muslim Brotherhood, has condemned the attacks and called for a strong international response. Already there are protest rallies and marches in solidarity with the people of Gaza being organized in Cairo.

Israel: Three civilians killed by rockets fired from Gaza as violence escalates

Many in Egypt aren't sure what any of these moves will amount to. At the end of the day, any international measure condemning Israel will have to go through the U.N. and will most likely be vetoed by the United States.

So Israeli actions in Gaza will test the United States' evolving relationship with Egypt post-Hosni?Mubarak, the U.S.-backed dictator who was deposed in 2011.

Three Israelis were killed when their apartment building was struck by a rocket fired from the Gaza Strip, an attack that intensified tensions between Israel and Palestinian militants. The incident came after Hamas' top military commander and seven others were killed in a series of airstrikes by the Jewish state. NBC's Martin Fletcher reports.

The White House said on Wednesday that Obama had spoken to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Egypt's Morsi, and reiterated U.S. support for Israel's right to self-defense in light of rocket attacks from Gaza.

"The president urged Prime Minister Netanyahu to make every effort to avoid civilian casualties. The two agreed that Hamas needs to stop its attacks on Israel to allow the situation to de-escalate," the statement said. ?"The president also spoke with President Morsi given Egypt's central role in preserving regional security. In their conversation, President Obama condemned the rocket fire from Gaza into Israel and reiterated Israel's right to self-defense."

These and other initial statements out of Washington have been received with great disappointment on the Arab street. ?Unlike in the past, the Arab street increasingly matters to more responsive Arab governments.

Many in Egypt blame Palestinians for a week of rocket fire into southern Israel, but not the Israeli strikes on Gaza over the past week that have killed civilians, including young children. On Arab talk shows, news programs and press, many are denouncing Obama for failing to live up to the promise he made when he traveled to Cairo in 2009 and offered Muslims "a new beginning"?and "mutual respect.

Four years ago, under the same pretext it used in carrying out Operation Pillars of Defense, Israel carried out Operation Cast Lead to stop Palestinian rocket fire into southern Israel. ?It is hard to say that the operation succeeded -- Hamas not only remains firmly in power and it has grown stronger in Gaza.

Israel acknowledged that since Cast Lead, Palestinian militant groups have acquired new longer-range rockets and missiles and Hamas has not been?weakened?operationally to the point its not a threat.

If Israel's military operation failed to stop rocket fire four years ago, why would it succeed this time around?
