France targets Islamist bases in northern Mali

PARIS (AP) ? New French airstrikes targeted fuel depots and bases of Islamist extremists in northern Mali overnight, as the French military intervention turns away from cities and toward the radicals' desert outposts that had raised fears of a Saharan launchpad for international terrorism.

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said on France-Inter radio Monday that the strikes hit the Kidal region, near the border with Algeria, for the second night in a row. The extremists "cannot stay there a long time unless they have ways to get new supplies," he said.

French Mirage and Rafale planes also pounded extremist training camps as well as arms and fuel depots from Saturday night into the early hours of Sunday, north of the town Kidal and in the Tessalit region.

The French intervened in Mali on Jan. 11 to stem the advance of the al-Qaida-linked fighters, who had taken over much of the African country and enforced harsh rules on the population.

After pushing extremists out of key cities, France is now pushing to hand over control of those sites to African forces from a U.N.-authorized force made up of thousands of troops from nearby countries.

"In the cities that we are holding we want to be quickly replaced by the African forces," Fabius said Monday.

Asked whether the French could pull out of the fabled city of Timbuktu and hand it to African forces as soon as Tuesday, Fabius responded, "Yes, it could happen very fast. We are working on it because our vocation is not to stay in the long term."

But it is far from clear that the African forces ? much less the weak Malian army ? are ready to see the thousands of French troops, fighter planes and helicopters withdraw and take full responsibility, in case the Islamic extremists attempt a comeback from their desert hideouts.

?Good? Challenges Viewers to Ask Tough Questions | Triangle Arts ...

GoodC.P. Taylor?s definitive holocaust play, ?Good,? has long been viewed as beautifully written and thought provoking. However, the piece?s dreary subject matter and its reliance on the strongest of performances and direction keep it from being one of those plays that pops up on theatre calendars regularly. Leave it to Burning Coal and director Ian Finley to rise to and meet the challenge head-on.

The success or failure of ?Good? hinges largely on who is cast in the main role of Halder, a literature professor who gradually becomes a supporter of and active participant in the Nazi party. Steven Roten?s Halder is not a victim of circumstance, as the role is often played, nor is he completely evil. His Halder is simply an imperfect human who makes poor choices and is thus a character whom the audience identifies with. This identification is the key to getting viewers to ask themselves the tough questions that are at the heart of this piece?what defines good and evil? Where do we draw the line between the two? Would we make the same choices as Halder if placed in his shoes?

Roten is backed by equally strong cast members, many of whom do double duty, moving seamlessly in and out of multiple roles. Julie Oliver?s darkly comic portrayal of Hadler?s aged, demanding mother is particularly notable. Also brilliant here is director Finley?s choice to leave many of the actors onstage long after their lines are complete. They sit hauntingly in the background, watching Hadler?s every move with accusing gazes. ?Subtle lighting highlights or diminishes their visibility at key moments, and this, combined with the smooth, non-linear action gives the viewer the sensation of being inside of Hadler?s head, which is a scary place to be indeed.

Good runs through Sunday, February 17. For tickets and information, visit BurningCoal.org.

We're Desperate For 'Elysium' Updates, Or: Hey, Look At Jodi Foster's Hair!

Since we didn't make it into Hall H during the "Elysium" presentation at Comic-Con, we've spent the last few months looking forward to something we essentially know nothing about. Yes, it's coming from Neill Blomkamp, the mastermind behind "District 9," and it's got a badass cast that includes Matt Damon, Jodi Foster, and Sharlto Copley, [...]

Sarah's Slim-Down: Week one of Inferno

Sarah's Slim-Down

Ever wonder if a diet plan's claims are for real? We sure do ? so we've decided to put health and diet plans to the test, starting with DailyBurn.com's Inferno program. Is it too good to be true?

Sarah -- Week 1

When you write about health, many emails come across your desk promising a new and can't-miss weight loss plan -- especially in January. But do any of them actually work? That's always a thought, and honestly I carry a good deal of skepticism.

Sarah's stats

Height: 5 feet 6 inches

Weight: 194 pounds

Here at SheKnows, we decided to test one after an email came across promising "10 Tips to Lose 10 Pounds in a Month." Being 10 pounds lighter would be amazing. Did you know that five pounds of fat is roughly the size of a football? Crazy but true. I would love to be two footballs lighter next month.

The truth is that I am overweight by about 45 pounds, and I need to do something about it. After two pregnancies and a very stressful year, I've reached a way-higher-than-I'm-comfortable-with weight. I am uncomfortable and want to fit into my favorite clothes again. I am ready to shed some serious weight.

The 10 tips

These are the 10 tips I will be following, provided by a spokeswoman for DailyBurn.com.

1

Drink a protein shake
for breakfast

Goodbye whole-grain toast and eggs! I'll be trading my normal breakfast for a protein shake. (Um, yay?) Why? "Eating protein in the morning will help you stay full and satisfied until your next meal," reads the tip list.

Everyone should be doing this one. It's no secret that hydration is important, so I'll be upping the ante on my daily water-drinking?? starting with two glasses first thing in the morning.

3

Take the
Inferno challenge

So, there's this workout plan called Inferno. It's a new high-intensity fat-burner workout program from DailyBurn.com. And I will be doing it. According to the tip sheet? "Fitness trainer Anja Garcia will take you to your limit and then push you past it. In just 21 days, you?ll see your muscles start to pop as your fat melts away." Oh my.

4

Get off the cardio machines and start strength training

I've always tried to do a mix of cardio and strength training, but truth be told I find strength training boring, so I totally dread it. But the plan says this is important so I'm totally going for it. The reasoning makes sense: "To lose weight, you want your body to become inefficient in a sense, because you want your body to burn your own fat for fuel." Burn, baby, burn.

5

Turn off your computer/TV one hour before bedtime

Confession: I have a hard time falling asleep without the TV on. My family has been through a lot in the last few months, and the noise helps me shut out my thoughts. But I am going to give this a try since it promises some good things: "Quality sleep helps aid in muscle recovery and fat metabolism."

According to the plan, snacking is just fine (Yay!) as long as you are snacking on nutritious things?? like nuts, veggies and hummus instead of candy and chips. That I can totally do.

7

Don?t eat in front
of a screen

When I read this one, I was tempted to pretend I didn't see it. I am all about the multitasking, so lunch is often eaten while working (in front of the computer), reading (hello, Kindle!) or watching a little daytime TV (GH! My favorite!). But apparently that makes you not pay attention to what you are eating. "Visual cues help your body regulate how much you should eat."

8

Feel the difference between craving and hunger

When you've been stress eating (which admittedly I am guilty of), you forget the feeling of hunger?? which is actually a pleasant and affirming thing (ahem, you should totally feel hunger). But cravings? Those are different?? and they need to be controlled (something I have never been great at). "You feel true hunger in your stomach, but you feel cravings in your brain. Just because you want to eat something doesn?t mean that your body is truly hungry. Learn to distinguish between the two and you?ll discover that most of your mindless eating is to satisfy emotional cravings."

Like water, fiber is one of those important and necessary things. "Fiber helps flush out your digestive system by keeping food moving through your intestines. It also acts as a scrubber to your intestinal wall, along with adding bulk in your intestines, which helps move food along." So somewhere in there, I need to get more of it.

This one is pretty easy, honestly, since this plan presents so much of a challenge for me. And that's good: "Your body will never shed weight it if feels comfortable." No worries there.

Ready to start

One of the reasons I was so excited to get started on this is that I am accountable to you, the lovely readers. I know you'll be looking to see how this goes?? and I hope that the results will delight us all. And we're off!

Swing a smart tax deal on business car trade-ins ? Business ...

A subscriber to Small Business Tax Strategies has asked us about a common situation: What happens tax-wise when I trade in one business car for another? Do I have to pay the IRS any tax on the value negotiated with the dealer?

Answer: Usually, you won?t owe any current tax on the trade-in of a business car, although you?ll still have to make certain adjustments in the new car?s basis. Depending on the situation, you might even jigger the trade-in value to lock in a better tax result.

As a practical matter, however, you will probably keep writing off depreciation costs each year without ever recovering the full cost of any one of your cars, especially if you?re buying high-priced vehicles (see chart below).

Here?s the whole story: If you trade in a vehicle you use for business driving for another business-use vehicle, the transaction qualifies as a ?like-kind exchange? under Section 1031 of the tax code. In other words, you don?t pay any tax if you complete the deal within the two tax law deadlines:

  1. The new vehicle must be identified within 45 days of the trade-in.
  2. You must receive the new vehicle within 180 days or your tax return due date (plus) extensions, if that?s earlier.

If you don?t receive a business car in ex??change, you have either a taxable gain or a loss upon disposition.

Assuming you are negotiating a trade-in, your adjusted basis of the new vehicle for depreciation equals the adjusted basis of your old vehicle plus any additional amount you have to pay for the new vehicle, minus the extra depreciation you could have claimed if the traded-in vehicle was used 100% for business (see box below).

Don?t cross the line on luxury cars

Another tax law provision limits the annual amount you can deduct for a business car. The limits are adjusted for inflation, but the thresholds have moved imperceptibly, or not at all, in recent years.

The IRS hasn?t announced the new limits for 2013 yet, but here are the limits for vehicles placed in service in 2012, based on 100% business use. (IRS Revenue Procedure 2012-23)

Note that the Section 179 deduction allows you to currently deduct up to $139,000 of the cost of business property placed in service in 2012. But you can?t use the Section 179 deduction to override the luxury car limits.

Tip: It probably doesn?t make sense to waste the Section 179 deduction on luxury cars. Use it for other business property.

Example: How to figure out your basis

Let?s say you purchased a business car for $30,000 in 2009, but you upgraded to a more expensive model last year costing $50,000. We will assume that your adjusted basis in the old car is $20,000 and that you?ve already claimed $9,908 in depreciation deductions on the car based on 80% business use. If you had claimed 100% business use, your deduction would have been $12,385. (For simplicity, this example will not take into account any bonus depreciation or Section 179 deductions.)

To figure out the basis of your new car, start with the adjusted basis of your old car of $20,092 ($30,000 cost ? $9,908 in depreciation). Then you add the additional $20,000 in cost for the replacement vehicle ($50,000 ? $30,000) to arrive at a subtotal of $40,092. Finally, you subtract the excess depreciation of $2,477 based on 100% business use ($12,385 in allowable depreciation ? $9,908 actually claimed). Result: Your new adjusted basis is $37,615.

Here?s how it breaks down:

Although your basis is being adjusted upward, your depreciation deduction is still limited by the luxury car rules. For instance, if you used your new car 80% for business in 2012, your first-year deduction equals $2,528 (80% of $3,160), or $8,928 (80% of $11,160) if you claim bonus depreciation.

Tip: Try to negotiate a higher trade-in value to reduce the sales tax due on a new vehicle.
