We read something about green smoothies, see pictures of the glowing skin and toned bodies that are achieved as a result of treating our body like a temple, and get really excited about filling our fridges with greens and our pantries with quinoa. But then after a couple of weeks of choosing dandelion tea over coffee and stevia over sugar, things can go a little pear shaped. It?s inevitable that old habits may rear their alluring head, but this doesn?t mean that you are failing at carving out your new healthy lifestyle. You are just getting started.
Here are some ways to stay on track and keep motivated when you?re transitioning to the healthy life.
1. Add stuff in rather than take stuff out: Rather than imposing strict rules on yourself, the easiest way to introduce new healthy habits is to add in healthy habits in order to crowd out the bad.
2. Know that it doesn?t have to be all or nothing: If you?ve been doing a brilliant job of eating clean, but then have a moment of weakness, this does not mean that you are back to square one. Health is like a muscle that will get stronger and stronger the more you work on it. If you fall off the wagon, just get back on without making yourself feel guilty.
3. Forgive yourself: Be totally okay with wherever you are at in this point in your life. Be gentle with yourself. Don?t berate yourself.
4. Keep your eyes on the prize: Whenever you feel yourself making excuses and losing enthusiasm, continually remind yourself of whatever it is you want to achieve. Write it down on a post-it note and stick it to your fridge, your computer or your diary. Having a clear vision of what you want will pull you through the murky moments.
5. Create inspiration markers: Build an inspiration board, surround yourself with positive affirmations and sign up to newsletters from websites that will serve as daily reminders of your goals.
6. Hang out with people who support and inspire your journey: Enablers are fun to hang out with. They spike your carrot juice with vodka and sit on your shoulder urging you to stuff your face with KFC, but they aren?t doing you and your wellness goals any favours. Try to surround yourself with people who are like-minded, supportive and inspiring.
7. Be realistic: I?m no dream crusher, so I?m not about to tell you there is anything you can?t do. However, when I say ?realistic?, what I mean is to set goals that you are 100 per cent dedicated to achieving. You have to believe with all of your being that it is possible to get to where you want to be. If this is the case, nothing will be able to stop you.
