Moheli : The isolated and virtually untouched island | World Travel ...

Moh?li is so small that you can drive around it in half a day, but so rich that you can spend a whole weekthere without getting bored. It is nestled in the Indian Ocean, off the African eastern coast. Moh?li, with290 km2 (20 km by 10) also known as Mwali, of the three African islands which make up the nation ofComoros. The capital city of Moheli is Fomboni. It?s wild, undeveloped and sparsely populated with fewmodern amenities. Moh?li is the wildest and least populated island of the Union, but also the most scenicand preserved, the true ?Pearl of the Comoros?.
A rich history and hospitable citizens
The first inhabitants of Comoros were Southeast Asians in the 8th century. Afterward, African, Arabs andPersians immigrants gave birth to the Swahili culture, linking the islands to East Africa. The foremostEuropeans to land on the islands were the Portuguese in the 19th century, but the French were more firmin colonizing the islands and by the late 19th century the Comoros islands were French run, until 1975and the independence. Moh?li is nowadays much safer than any Western country, with thievery almostunheard of. Its 35000 inhabitants mainly live off the land and sea, as there are no industries on Moh?li.Moh?lians are Muslim and very tolerant. Islamic Culture has led to the adoption of many aspects of Arabdress and custom. Women cover their heads when walking outside of home, water is used instead oftoilet paper and men spend many hours discussing in the shade and playing dominos. However, what willstrike you most is the hospitability of the people.
Sightseeing in Moheli
There are enormous tourist attractions in Moheli. Fomboni is home to striking beaches. Here you willget to see dhows (Arab sailing boats) sailing into the Indian Ocean. These boats are built on the beach.There is a marine reserve situated off the western coast of the island of Moheli. The reserve is home toa huge population of green turtles. Local fishermen offer trips to Niumashuwa Bay from Niumashuwain motorized canoes called pirogues. You will get to see giant turtles in Niumashuwa Bay. From Moheliyou can choose to go on an excursion to Nzwani which is landscaped by mystifying waterfalls and lushgreenery. There are great beaches in Bimbini region of the island. While visiting Nzwani you could visitthe perfume distilleries located in Bambao. Mutsamudu is the main town in Nzwani. It is dotted withmeandering alleys, citadels, 17th century old houses and mosques. From Moheli you must go for a trip toMahore Island. It is encircled by coral reefs. Mahore has stunning beaches which are excellent for scubadiving.
Shopping in Moheli
Moheli offers a diversity of shopping. The island is dotted with curios shops selling beautifully craftedbaskets, clothes, spices, homemade lamps, vegetable peelers, coconut items and essential oils. Theshops offer an excellent collection of shells.
Restaurants and Bars in Moheli
In Moheli there is a good option of eateries which offer a wide array of African, French and Europeandishes. Here in Moheli you must have the succulent fruit called Djak which tastes like lychee. It is a biggreen fruit.
